Läpimurtosovellus

Läpimurtosovellus[1] (engl. killer application tai lyhyemmin killer app) tarkoittaa tietokoneohjelmaa, joka osoittaa sen alustana toimivan tekniikan (kuten pelikonsolin, kotitietokoneen tai käyttöjärjestelmän) arvon ja edistää sen suosiota.[2]

Historia

Ensimmäisenä killer applicationina pidetään Apple II -tietokoneelle tehtyä VisiCalc-taulukkolaskentaohjelmaa. Ohjelman ansiosta laite yleistyi nopeasti varsinkin talouden alalla.[3] Toinen esimerkki löytyy myös taulukkolaskennasta: vuonna 1983 julkaistu Lotus 1-2-3 oli IBM PC:n läpimurtosovellus.[4] Sibelius oli Acorn Archimedes -tietokoneen läpimurtosovellus, jonka ansiosta säveltäjät ostivat Archimedes-tietokoneen.[5] PageMaker oli Macintoshin läpimurtosovellus.[6]

Space Invadersin käännös Atari 2600:lle oli konsolin läpimurtosovellus, jonka ansiosta monet kuluttajat hankkivat konsolin vain pelatakseen kyseistä peliä.[7]

Bungie Studiosin kehittämä Halo: Combat Evolved oli Xboxin läpimurtosovellus, jonka sanotaan tehneen ensimmäisen persoonan ammuntapeleistä pelattavia pelikonsoleilla.[8]
