Daniel Bell

Daniel Bell (10. toukokuuta 1919 New York – 25. tammikuuta 2011 Cambridge, Massachusetts) oli yhdysvaltalainen sosiologi.[1]

Elämä

Bell syntyi Manhattanilla Lower East Sidessa. Hänen vanhempansa olivat siirtolaisia Itä-Euroopasta ja perheen sukunimi oli alkujaan Bolotsky. Perheen isä kuoli Danielin ollessa 8-vuotias ja hänen ollessaan 13-vuotias sukunimeksi vaihdettiin Bell.[1]

Bell valmistui City College of New Yorkista vuonna 1939. Hän opetti Chicagon yliopistossa 1940-luvulla ja toimi sosiologian professorina Columbian yliopistossa 1959–1969, minkä jälkeen hän siirtyi Harvardin yliopistoon. Bell tutki muun muassa sosialismin epäonnistumisia Yhdysvalloissa, modernin kulttuurin hiipumista ja kapitalismin siirtymää teollisuusyhteiskunnasta kulutusyhteiskunnaksi. Hänet tunnetaan kansainvälisesti muun muassa kirjoista The End of Ideology (1960), The Coming of Post-Industrial Society (1973) ja Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism (1978).[1]

Yksityiselämä

Bellin poika David Bell on historioitsija, joka on työskennellyt muun muassa Johns Hopkinsin yliopiston ja Princetonin yliopiston professorina.[2][1]

Tammikuussa 2011 Bell kuoli 91-vuotiaana kotonaan Cambridgessa, Massachusettsissa lyhyen sairauden jälkeen.[3]
