Bottiaia

Bottiaia ja muut Makedonian valtakunnan alueet (n. 334–323 eaa.) kartalla.

Bottiaia (m.kreik. Βοττιαία, lat. Bottiaea) oli antiikin aikainen alue ja myöhempi Makedonian valtakunnan osa Ala-Makedoniassa nykyisessä pohjoisessa Kreikassa.[1][2]

Maantiede

Bottiaia sijaitsi Ala-Makedonian tasangon keskiosissa. Se käsitti suurin piirtein Bermion-vuoren ja Aksios-joen välisen alueen. Sen eteläpuolella sijaitsi Pieria, lounaispuolella Elimeia ja Eordaia, länsipuolella Lynkestis, luoteispuolella Almopia ja itäpuolella Mygdonia.

Historia

Bottiaian aluetta asutti alun perin bottiaialaisten (Bottiaioi, Βοττιαῖοι) heimo. Valtaansa laajentaneet makedonialaiset karkottivat nämä kotiseudultaan arkaaisella kaudella 600- tai 500-luvulla eaa. Tämän jälkeen bottiaialaiset siirtyivät idemmäksi Chalkidikín niemimaana nykyisin tunnetun niemimaan länsiosiin, jossa heistä sai nimensä Bottiken alue.[1][3]

Makedonialaisvallan aikana Bottiaia oli valtakunnan ydinaluetta, sillä siellä sijaitsivat sekä vanha pääkaupunki Aigai että uusi pääkaupunki Pella. Roomalaisella kaudella Bottiaian aluetta alettiin kutsua nimellä Emathia.
