Anton Karsten

Anton Amandus Karsten (26. heinäkuuta 1862 Siipyy – 13. kesäkuuta 1915 Turku[1]) oli suomalainen historian ja ruotsin kielen opettaja, rehtori ja journalisti.

Anton Karsten kasvoi Ahvenanmaan saaristossa, jossa hänen isänsä oli Föglön kirkkoherrana. Hän valmistui ylioppilaaksi Turun ruotsalaisesta klassisesta lyseosta vuonna 1882, suoritti kandidaatintutkinnon Helsingin yliopistossa vuonna 1886 ja työskenteli ruotsin kielen opettajana Oulun suomalaisessa lyseossa vuodesta 1888. Karsten suoritti lisensiaatintutkinnon ja puolusti väitöskirjaansa Kökarsmålet, ljud- och formlära vuonna 1891. Vuonna 1897 hän siirtyi ruotsin opettajaksi Turun suomalaiseen klassiseen lyseoon ja vuonna 1904 hänestä tuli Turun ruotsalaisen reaalilyseon historian ja ruotsin lehtori. Vuodesta 1912 lähtien Karsten toimi myös koulun rehtorina.[2][3]

Karsten osallistui innolla yhteiskunnallisiin rientoihin ja oli kiinnostunut varsinkin työväenkysymyksestä ja sosialismista. Hän toimitti Uleåborgsbladetia vuosina 1891–1897, kuului Åbo Underrättelserin toimitukseen vuosina 1898–1906 ja perusti vuonna 1907 lyhytikäiseksi jääneen Politiken-lehden. Karstenin yhteiskunnallinen radikalismi ei saanut laajempaa kannatusta ja myöhemmin hän keskittyi kouluasioihin.[2][3][4]
