Chicagoko Sute Handia (ingelesez: Great Fire of Chicago) 1871ko urriaren 8an hasi zen, eta hiru egun geroago, urriaren 10ean, kontrolatu zuten. Suak galera handiak eragin zituen, hiriaren 9 km² inguru suntsituz, 300 pertsona hilez eta 100.000 biztanle baino gehiago etxerik gabe utziz. Sutea hiriaren erdiguneko hego-ekialdeko auzo batean piztu zen. Lehorte-aldi luze bat eta klima bero eta haizetsua elkartu ziren; gainera, hiri osoan zurezko eraikuntzak nagusiak ziren. Horri esker, izugarrizko sutea piztu zen. Suak Chicago ibaiaren hegoaldeko adarra gainditu zuen eta Chicagoko erdialdearen zati handi bat suntsitu zuen, gero ibaiaren adar nagusitik jauzi egin eta hiriaren iparraldeko aldea kontsumitzeko.

Laguntza hasieratik eta sutea itzali eta askoz geroago iritsi zen hirira. Hiriko gobernuak eraikuntza-kodeak aldatu zituen etorkizuneko hondamendiei aurrea hartzeko, eta hiria berehala berreraiki zuen estandar berri horiek aplikatuta. Chicagoko Eskola sortu zen, hiria bere errautsetatik altxatzeaz arduratzen zena, eta, horrela, Ipar Amerikako estilo propioa garatu zuen. Erresuma Batuko dohaintza batek Chicagoko Liburutegi Publikoaren ezarpena bultzatu zuen, liburutegi publikoaren doako sistema bat, garai hartako kidetza baten ordainketa eskatzen zuten liburutegi pribatuekin kontrastatzen zuena.

Type of boiler Sectioned fire-tube boiler from a DRB Class 50 locomotive. Hot flue gases created in the firebox (on the left) pass through the tubes in the centre cylindrical section, which is filled with water, to the smokebox and out of the chimney (stack) at far right. The steam collects along the top of the boiler and in the steam dome roughly halfway along the top, where it then flows into the large pipe seen running forward. It is then divided into each side and runs downward in the ste...
