VOB (DVD-Video Object o Versioned Object Base) es un tipo de fichero contenido en los DVD-Video. Incluye el video, audio, subtítulos y menús en forma de stream.

Los ficheros VOB están codificados normalmente siguiendo el estándar MPEG-2. Si cambiamos la extensión de .vob a .mpg o .mpeg, el fichero es legible y continúa teniendo toda la información, aunque algunos visualizadores no soportan las pistas de subtítulos.

Para grabar los ficheros VOB en un disco DVD±R, son necesarios además otros ficheros DVD-Video, por ejemplo los IFO y BUP.

Formato de archivo

Como se ha indicado anteriormente, los archivos en formato VOB tienen la siguiente extensión. vob y suelen almacenarse en el directorio VIDEO_TS en la raíz del DVD.[3]​ El formato VOB se basa en el formato de flujo de programa MPEG, pero con restricciones y especificaciones adicionales para los flujos privados.[4]​ El flujo de programa MPEG tiene disposiciones para datos no estándar (utilizados en archivos VOB) en forma de los denominados flujos privados.[5]​[6]​ Los archivos VOB son un subconjunto muy estricto del estándar de flujo de programas MPEG. Aunque todos los archivos VOB son secuencias de programas MPEG, no todas las secuencias de programas MPEG se ajustan a la definición de archivo VOB.

De forma similar a un flujo de programa MPEG, un archivo VOB puede contener H. 262/MPEG-2 Parte 2 o MPEG-1 Parte 2 de vídeo, MPEG-1 Audio Layer II o MPEG-2 Audio Layer II de audio, pero el uso de estos formatos de compresión en un archivo VOB tiene algunas limitaciones en comparación con el flujo de programa MPEG.[7]​[8]​ Además, el archivo VOB puede contener audio y subtítulos PCM lineal, AC-3 o DTS.[9]​ Los archivos VOB no pueden contener audio AAC (MPEG-2, Parte 7), formatos de compresión MPEG-4 ni otros formatos permitidos en el estándar de flujo de programas MPEG.

En el DVD, todo el contenido de un conjunto de títulos está ordenado secuencialmente, pero se divide en archivos VOB de 1 GB cuando es necesario para ser compatible con todos los sistemas operativos, ya que algunos no pueden leer archivos de mayor tamaño.[10]​

Los archivos VOB pueden ir acompañados de archivos IFO y BUP.[11]​ Estos archivos tienen extensiones. ifo y. bup en consecuencia.

Los archivos IFO (información) contienen toda la información que el reproductor de DVD necesita saber sobre el DVD para que el usuario pueda navegar correctamente por el disco y reproducir todo el contenido,[12]​ como por ejemplo dónde empieza un capítulo, dónde se encuentra una determinada secuencia de audio o subtítulos, información sobre las funciones de menú y navegación.
