La diócesis de Neoburgo (en alemán: Bistum Neuburg) fue una sede episcopal medieval de la Iglesia católica, establecida a mediados del siglo VIII en la Alta Baviera en Alemania y desaparecida a principios del siglo IX al unirse a la diócesis de Augsburgo.

Historia

La sede del obispado de Neoburgo estaba situada en el monasterio de Staffelsee en la isla Wörth del lago Staffel, cerca de la localidad de Murnau en los Alpes bávaros. Los primeros obispos fueron los abades de ese monasterio, encargados de la evangelización del lugar. Al final de su existencia, a principios del siglo IX, el centro del obispado se situaba en la ciudad de Neoburgo (en alemán: Neuburg an der Donau), junto al río Danubio, de ahí su nombre.

La fundación tuvo lugar probablemente antes de 750, por el patrocinio de unos jóvenes de la nobleza bávara que deseaban vivir en comunidad cristiana, impulsados por los carolingios, deseosos de cristianizar a los pueblos germánicos de la zona. En principio dependieron de la arquidiócesis de Maguncia, como el resto de las diócesis bávaras y suabas (Salzburgo, Frisinga, Passau, Ratisbona, Augsburgo) que fueron organizadas por Bonifacio, apóstol de los germanos.

El papa León III elevó el 20 de abril de 798 al obispo Arno, consejero del emperador Carlomagno, a arzobispo de Salzburgo, y haciendo al obispado de Neoburgo una diócesis sufragánea de la arquidiócesis de Salzburgo. Hacia 802 la diócesis fue disuelta y unida a la diócesis de Augsburgo en tiempos del obispo de ambas diócesis san Simperto, sobrino del emperador Carlomagno.
