Laŭ la helena mitologio Erebo (el la gr. Έρεβος) aŭ Skotoso (Σκότος), reprezentas la inferan mallumon. Rilatas al la hindeŭropa regwos kiu aperas en la sanskrita kiel rajah obskura spaco, el la gotika siquis obskura. Laŭ la greko-romia mitologio, la meza kaj malluma regiono de la subtera Hadeso inter Tartaro kaj Elizeo. En ĉi tiu regiono la animoj suferas dolorajn turmentojn pro siaj pekoj, sed ĝi ne estas tute egala al la judo-kristana infero, ĉar tie la animoj ne suferas eterne, ili kelktempe supreniras al pli altaj hadesaj regionoj aŭ revenas al la tero, pere de reenkarniĝo, por nova puriga ekzistado.

Li spruĉis el Ĥaoso, sed laŭ la orfea tradicio li estis filo de Ĥrono kaj Ananko. Erebo estis frato kaj edzo de Nikso (Nokto). Li mem naskis Eteron, kaj kun Nikso estis patro de multaj idoj: Hemero (la taglumo), Moroso, Karono, Eroso, Eleoso, Epafo, Epifrono, Ptono kaj la keresoj.

Nikso disŝutas la Ereban mallumon sur la ĉielo, formante tiel nokton. Poste ŝia filino Hemero dissolvas ĝin kaj ebligis tiel ke la lumo de Etero atingis la teron dum tago, ĉar la antikvaj grekoj pensis ke Suno ne estis la origino de lumo.
