Adamantano estas senkolora kristala kemia komponaĵo kun kamforeca odoro. Ĝi estas cickoalkano[2] kaj la plej simpla diamantoido[3]. Molekuloj de adamantano konsistas je kvar konektitaj cikloheksanaj[4] ringoj aranĝitaj laŭ "brakseĝa" konfiguracio. Ĝi estas unika pro tio ke ĝi estas rigida substanco kaj virtuale streĉo-libera.

Alia konfiguracio simile al boato ankaŭ ekzisteblas. La adamantano estas la plej stabila inter ĉiuj izomeroj kies formulo estas C10H16, inklude de la iom simila strukturo konata kiel tuistano. La spaca aranĝo de la karbonatomoj en la molekulo de adamanteno estas la sama kiel en la kristala diamanto.

Historio

La ebleco pri la ekzistado de hidrokarbonido kun formulo C10H16 kaj strukturo simila al tiu de la diamanto estis unue sugestita de H. Decker en 1924. Li nomis tiu molekulon "dekaterpeno".[5]

Samjare, la germana kemiisto Hans Meerwein (1879-1965) provis sintezi la kombinaĵon per reakcio inter la formaldehido kaj la duetila malonato ĉe influo de la piperidino. Tio estis la unua laboratoria provo pri sintezo de tiu substanco. Sed, anstataŭ la dezirata produkto, Meerwein estigis la 1,3,5,7-kvarkarbometoksoduciklo [3.3.1]nonano-2,6-diono.
