The reason why I took pages off the list was because I had previously put notes beside those pages stating that they do not need to be on the list anymore because the only pages that linked to them were pages that disambiguated to them. However several weeks later they remained on the list, and I felt they need to be deleted from the list. Thanks for your interest in the article. I am not sure if I understand the message, however. I am being as specific as I can. Vasiukov was born in 1933 when the Soviet Union was in full swing, but he died in 2006 after it broke up in 1991. So, he could be referred to as a Soviet player, a Russian player, or perhaps both, for greater clarity. I'll just answer here, thanks. I did edit that page, but only to change the word "Renovation" to "Refurbishment". I haven't had anything else to do with it! However, it looks like the section you are interested in is copied out of a Department of Defense specification having to do with telecommunications. As far as I can tell without consulting the original source, it seems to be referring to "material" as meaning any kind of physical component of a telecommunications system (could be anything from a circuit board in a switch to a piece of copper wire to a telephone set). --Russ (talk) 20:51, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for this lovely little note on my talkpage. I found the page completely un-wikified on New pages, and began the process of wikifying it the way I normally do - I go a section at a time and link anything I think should be linked, then save the page, then check each individual link and fix those that don't point where I want them to. In other words - I was well aware that a number of those probably linked to DAB pages and I'm working on it. Russ I am very interested in how you developed your bot. I am exploring how I can use bots on an another wiki and would love to chat about lessons learned, best practices, and whatever else I need to start it out. I saw that you've updated User:RussBot/DPL with data from the April dump, and I was wondering if it would be possible to use that dump to create new lists for Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/from categories, Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/from templates, and (though far from necessary) Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/from portals. I'm basically done with the old category list now, but since the dumps used are all over a year old, it would be good to get a new infusion of data. Would you be willing to try it out? • I already have User:RussBot/DPL/Templates which I have been working on (it was my first effort, and as you'll see the list came out backwards and the "top" item turned out to be a false positive, but it's a start). My list is sorted by the number of times the template is used on other pages, not the number of disambig pages linked on it, which I find more useful. I changed Computer game into a redirect as well. Please let me know if you think any of those changes were unwarranted.

A few people at the main DPL page have been itching for a new list, and it appears to be good timing based on our discussion about switching lists at ~80% completion. Thought I might let you know that I noticed this bot tried to fix a double redirect at List of articles with C programs, which is supposed to point at a category page. Hello! I've reverted these two speedy deletion requests you made (I have to assume) while running your bot in supervised mode. Please be careful when nominating pages for speedy deletions. First of all, it would be really nice if you could post a warning on the talk page of the creator when you do so. There's nothing more frustrating to a newbie than seeing that the page they created has dissapeared without knowing what happened. In the first case, the article Andrew Avellino was created by User:Polylerus, a well respected longtime Wikipedian. In fact, the only problem with the article is that it had been vandalized and a cursory look at the page's history shows that clearly. As for Technip, the article makes it abundantly clear that this is a well-known, well-established company of importance whose notability is unquestionable. It had been edited by a few users and has articles in the French and Finnish wikipedias. It had also been the recent target of vandalism, resulting in the nonsensical paragraph that probably led you to put up the {{db-spam}} template. It's not a great idea to have the bot account put up the speedy deletion requests because, well, nobody is too comfortable with a bot putting up such critical requests. It also means that you're putting up these after a cursory glance at the article without first checking the history or making preliminary research on the subject. If, while supervising your bot, you find problem pages, please consider adding them to a list which you'll check out later when you have enough time to do speedy-requests with care. As an exception to not editing anything before the link to "links" on the current dump list, if a page is moved the way Final four (disambiguation) was moved to Final four, is there any reason not to edit the beginning of the line to link to the correct dab page, rather than noting it as "now at Foo (links)"? A few questions, if you don't mind. I've downloaded python and installed it, that went fine. But I'm having trouble using CVS to download the framework, it seems to stop at a point and not go on. At first I thought it had something to do with the size of the files, so I left it running while I was gone. But 3 hours later it only went on with 2 files. Well... It worked perfectly. 6 minutes for pass 1, and 17 for pass 2. I'd like to make sure that I understand the output data properly. So, as far as I have understood:

• bad redirections - point to themselves.
  • Correct (or point to another page that points back to the first one)
• long redirections - contain more than just the redirection
  • Correct
• DPL - Disambiguation page links (right?) - the disambiguation pages with links that need fixing.
  • Correct. Only pages with at least 50 references (from articles) are listed.
• DPL/Templates - links generated by templates.
  • Correct.
• dump statistics - The first table - statistics for the whole wikipedia. the second table - statistics of pages that link to disambig pages.
  • Correct.

Am I right? Let me know. And I'd like to ask a few questions, if you don't mind:

1. What will happen if i run the bot again on the same dump? What if I run it on a newer dump?
   • If you run it again on the same dump, it should produce exactly the same output. If you run it on a newer dump, it will overwrite all the pages listed above, except dump statistics, which will have the new output appended at the end.
2. If I change the output text into Hebrew, will it work (UNICODE characters)?
   • It should, but I haven't tested it. Before the first line of xmlanalyze.py you'll need to add a line that reads exactly as follows:

# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-

You can change any quoted string in xmlanalyze.py, except for file names and regular expressions -- and you should change the ones that refer to specific namespaces like "User:" and "Template:". The talk page conversation is most uncivil and even one of the posters was a vandal (which you have reverted). I do not see an adequate discussion to move the page.

Consider a search for "Midsummer Night's Dream", as you can see the first hit is "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and second one is "Midsummer Night's Dream". If people typo and forget to put an 'A' in front of the title the first line they read will show them their mistake to them.

And yes I generally expect people to either use the "search" function or know the exact title in what they are looking for.

Change the quoted string to match the page where you saved the result of the previous dump. (It looks like you must have originally used the default name and then moved the page to a different title.) The %s stands for your user name. Hi R'n'B. I notice that you've made a bunch of edits with the summary "remove text following redirect using AWB". I know that there are a lot of reasons that removing text below a redirect is important, but there is one big reason not to: most of the time, those pages arise as the result of a cut-and-paste moves. Cut-and-paste moves are very bad because they make it difficult or impossible to keep track of who contributed to the article, and thus may violate the terms of the GFDL. When you make those AWB edits, you obscure the evidence of the move and we lose our best chance of repairing them.

You can help. If no edits have been made to the copied version, you can undo the move yourself: just redirect the pasted version back to the original, remove the redirect from the original version, and leave descriptive edit summaries for both steps. If the pasted version has been edited, you can't fix it yourself, but can simply list it at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen for an administrator to handle by merging the page histories. Hi, Russ. Here's what you do: look at the first edit of the redirect target; if it's the same as the redirect's second to last edit, it's a straight paste and needs reversing. Also, remember that even for merges that require cutting and pasting, the GFDL requires some record or link to a record of the content's earlier contributors. The standard way to satisfy this is to link to the source article in the paste's edit summary. When I find an unattributed merge, I usually make a trivial edit (null edits get thrown out), note the source article and date of the paste edit, and then speak to the perpetrator. Others sometimes leave a link on the talk page, or even post the entire list previous contributors. Anyway, back to true paste moves; if you do do another of those AWB runs down the road, maybe you can at least just drop a list on the repair pen's talk page so others to analyze. The way the Category page was left, it was essentially broken (it contained a redirect back into the article namespace, and if any pages were ever added to the category, they would have remained invisible). For this one, it was unclear and I decided to err on the side of caution. I have been adding categories to redirects. For example the redirect Prohibition in Finland, now redirecting to Prohibition of alcohol##Nordic countries was included in categories History of Finland, Finnish society, 1932 in Finland and Prohibition by country. I was also marked with the template {{R with possibilities}}.

On 8 August 2007 Prohibition was moved to Prohibition of alcohol.

On 10 August 2007 your bot "fixed a double-redirect" moving the the redirect to Prohibition (disambiguation)#Nordic_countries. It also deleted all the categories and the template.

P.S. The original mess was caused by User:N-edits, but your bot escalated the problem. The correct action would have been simply to revert his incomplete page move.

My bot is designed so that if there is anything on the redirect page other than the actual redirect link, including categories or templates, it requires manual review before making any edits. My source is An Account of the Franchise history of This New Single-Phase Suburban Railway, of the Territory Which It Serves, of Its Relation to Previously Established Transit Lines, of the Character of Train Service Which It Gives and of the Method of Fare Collection, Electric Railway Journal, Vol. XXXIX, No. 21, May 25, 1912. This contemporaneous account refers to the line (as opposed to the company operating it) as the "New York, Westchester & Boston Railway". If you want to move the article to that title, you'll get no objection from me.

Looking at my copy (in Arcara (1985)), I note the "&" instead of "and". The cover of Arcara (which looks like it's taken from a bond of the company) includes "Company". I am thinking of adding a couple of redirects (NYW&B, for example), partially for my own benefit (but you can share). I'm guessing that most visits would be from internal links. I've converted mentions in the New Haven article and various NYC subway articles, Heathcote Bypass, and an article on "The Westchester", referring to the mall. One thing I'm trying to clear up is what happened to the NYW&B RAILROAD Company (the RR) between 1873 and 1906. In the article I assert that Morgan et al. bought the RR in 1906, but Arcara (no investment banker) is very unclear about that. I hope Bangs is better in that particular area. I also wonder what the markup was between the money paid for real estate by the RR and the $11 million paid by the Morgan interests.
