Proposed deletion of Upcoming mixed martial arts events
All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Thanks for the note on my talk page. Actually, I don't belong to any Projects, not even of those of subjects I'm particularly interested in. But I do a fair bit of disambiguating - I think that is how I've been involved in MMA articles. Anyway, good luck in finding people. StAnselm (talk) 01:24, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As with StAnselm, I was working on disabiguating pages. I have no particular interest in MMA. Good luck with the project, and hopefully you will get that section of wikipedia looking good. Suprcel (talk) 20:28, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed you went through and changed All the David Abbots back to Tank Abbott. I switched them to David because policy on wikipedia has always been to use real names instead of nicknames on results pages. For example, its always seen as Quinton Jackson instead of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson or Rampage Jackson.
Just letting you know, but thanks for your MMA contributions in general. Too many deletionists and not enough people willing to fix the current pages.
I am more than happy to work towards a solution to the issue of MMA event notability, but given the current everything must be recorded how the fans want position, I don't know what to recommend. Mtking (edits) 08:03, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Kevlar, I have been trying to figure out how everything around this project works. I was thinking that I could start by doing mass improvements that don't need a lot of experience. For example there is a lot of difference regarding how results are presented for events. Example if you compare UFC 100 with UFC 152. I was thinking I could go through all UFC events and making them look like UFC 152. I saw a discussion about how results should be presented but I cant find place where it says which standard should be used. Should I use the one from UFC 152?
Btw am I posting in the right place on this talkpage?
At a glance I can tell why the articles are being deleted. and that is because most of the sources are from garbage websites like mmajunkie and bloodyelbow and even ufc.com. Rather than say Chicago-sun times or NY times. Or even a yahoo sports article or regional newspaper would be better than online fan websites like Sherdog. In short all those bad references must be replaced with good ones. PortlandOregon97217 (talk) 00:40, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In terms of credibly covering higher level mixed martial arts, MMA Junkie, Bloody Elbow, MMA Mania, MMA Fighting and Sherdog rank far ahead of the brick and mortar newspapers or regional websites. There are dozens of original articles, interviews, videos, technical analysis and editorials produced by those sites PortlandOregon97217 calls "garbage" that are referenced by the fighters, agents, promoters and fans constantly. Each of the above sites is within the top 16,000 sites worldwide. I do write for Bloody Elbow and I'm making that fact known to head off any "secret bias" claims. Yahoo Sports does cover MMA, so do Sports Illustrated and ESPN. However, each of those three have a much smaller staff roster that has the time and space to do a certain amount of news/results articles. Furthermore, I've seen higher standards of fact-checking, sourcing and ethical standards backstage in my time at Bloody Elbow than I ever did at my college's newspaper and some brick and mortar newspapers.(DefGrappler (talk) 06:43, 12 December 2012 (UTC))[reply]
I agree with using more printed publications as sources, but MMAJunkie is an original news source and is owned by USA Today (USA Today even portal-links a majority of their MMA articles there if you search USA Today's own website for MMA). Sherdog is also an original news source and a partner of ESPN. They are also the oldest significant MMA website around and have an unbelievably comprehensive and invaluable database of almost every professional fighter who has ever been in the sport, numbering over 100,000 people at this point. BloodyElbow, while mostly a blog site, is owned by Vox Media and regularly conducts original interviews. All three of these sites are generally valid sources of information. I do agree that the sources need to be diversified more to include print sources. I recommend trying to use http://www.newsbank.com/ to look up more print sources for UFC events. Beansy (talk) 13:26, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, take a look at any number of other articles from sports that aren't one of the 6 or 7 most popular out there and you'll see any number of sport-specific sources, often websites. UFC articles have been actually much better sourced than most articles for second-tier sports as of late from what I can tell. Beansy (talk) 13:58, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the note, but I'm not interested in participating in a discussion to change the project guidelines — as others note, there's some terminology that you project members clearly know that I don't, and I don't want to offer opinions based on a misunderstanding of what's meant. Nyttend (talk) 20:37, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the work you have been putting into the new criteria, I think given the comments by User:Nintendude64 it needs to be made clear one way or the other does a UFC title fight demonstrate lasting effect. I believe they are routine and as such do not demonstrate lasting effect. Without a specific mention of this I foresee scope for continued debate at AfD's. Since you are for the most part the author of them I will leave it up to you to add something. Mtking (edits) 10:53, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry but this morning has been a bit busy, I have been mulling over in my head how to better frame the issue with title fights but not getting very far, for example if a fighter looses a title fight and then quits the sport, that is notable for the fighter and should be covered in the article on the fighter; I am not sure that would necessary follow through to demonstrating that the event it's self had lasting significance in relation to the overall narrative of MMA as a sport, take for example Dan Marino was his first or last game for Miami Dolphins of lasting significance in relation to the NFL or Football ? The problem is somewhat compounded in that there is no such thing as a overall world tittle fight, the fight is for that given promotions title it also seems to me that title fights do not necessary always occur be ween the two top ranked fighters. On the other hand I could see a occasion when for example there is a huge upset (or for that matter a huge disparage between fighters) in a title fight which for example leads to an outcry from fans and forces a change in the way contenders are chosen by the promoter that could show a lasting significance. Mtking (edits) 23:19, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
i could not agree more. my main problem was that in my v3.1 it almost read like "title fights can not make an event notable", i want to find a good way of saying: a title match doesn't really matter to notability, some are, some aren't. some non title matches have more long term lasting effect than some title matches. an event could begin with the worst card of fighters, and have no title match, but something in it could 'change the sport forever'. but then people think i'm trying to set the bar too high by saying "only the most notable events in the history of MMA should have their own articles" instead of events that adequately demonstrate lasting effect, should have their own articles." i believe within lasting effect there is a spectrum of how notable something was. if there were 20 events, arranged from 1 having displayed the highest degree of lasting effect, 10 having the least degree of lasting effect (but still demonstrating lasting effect), and 11 - 20 not having demonstrated lasting effect but 11 being closer than 20. just because 10 wasn't as notable as 1 doesn't mean it doesn't get it's own article. and just because 11 may have a lot of the same characteristics of 1 - 10, doesn't mean that it does, it couldn't on it's own display lasting effect.Kevlar (talk) 00:21, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It may be the case of accepting this and then fine tuning later as it becomes clear how firstly members of WP:MMA use it and secondly how the rest of the community reacts to that use in practice.
I could/would have supported that version but I have made a few minor changes, nothing is intended to change your overall thrust, if you feel that it has then feel free to ignore. I also tried to find a way of expressing something along the lines of "when demonstrating lasting significance if would be very helpful to show coverage of the lasting effect continued after the event (as per WP:CONTINUEDCOVERAGE)" but nothing I worded was concise enough and ended up putting two much emphasis on that one point over the others so gave up. If you can then add it good, otherwise I am fine with either yours or mine. Mtking (edits) 01:20, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why create an omnibus separating the free events by type. Like UFC on Fox, UFC on FX, UFC on FUEL TV, and so on. And for PPV numbers we also have UFC 1-10, UFC 10-20 and so on in incrimants of 10? We can also made an omnibus page for the TUF Finales. But they must be AS detailed as the stand alone articles. And very notable events like UFC 94 and UFC 148 must have their own page. Also needs to be updated and have NO spelling or grammatical errors. Can this be an idea to stop the madness over MMA on wikipedia? JonnyBonesJones (talk) 08:39, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
MMA Notability
Following your comment here, thanks for giving it ago, but it seams that to get consensus at WP:MMA any guideline would need in essence allow for an article on every UFC event however any such "free pass" will not be acceptable wiki-wide. Mtking (edits) 22:09, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
i think some people can see that omnibus pages aren't by nature terrible. the trick is to show people that. i decided to do some testing on User:Kevlar/2011 in UFC, took me -forever- to properly steal and modify that "Event Chronology" table. i'm then going to add what the current stand alone pages look like, probably organized by type (ppv, ufc on fox, TUF...) i'm then going to work on a list of "UFC rookies" and "last fight in the UFC" lists. i think with some work people will want omnibus articles because they can offer extra content and context. i hope with just my ideas as the example, they can see that other people will probably have even better ideas than me, and realize that omnibus does not equal end of world. Kevlar (talk) 23:09, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Kevlar. There has been discussion among some of us about modifying and implementing the MMAevent templates that you created. It's a bit scattered around between a couple different places. I wanted to get your feedback on a question I left on my talk page here about the three templates and their uses. If you have any responses or suggestions on the other stuff in that section feel free to add it in. Thanks. --TreyGeek (talk) 02:34, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, just noticed that the section you created WT:MMA#Omnibus discussion is essentially the same thing found in the 201X section right above it. I thought about moving your post and my reply up but didn't want to do so without asking you first. If you think they're enough the same, would you mind consolidating them so the discussion is in one place? Thanks! Ravensfire (talk) 20:43, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve 1993 in UFC
Hi, I'm Dr. Kadzi. Kevlar, thanks for creating 1993 in UFC!
I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. The page is an orphan, consider linking it to other pages.
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Kadzi (talk) 21:13, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Martial artist articles
I see you're adding articles. That's great. But, you're supposed to have punctuation, then a reference. for example, a reference goes after a period, not before. So, it's something like this: Billy Unger is an actor who plays Chase Davenport in Lab Rats.<ref>[reference]</ref>, not Billy Unger is an actor who plays Chase Davenport in Lab Rats<ref>[reference]</ref>.. -- EvilLair (talk to me!) 05:32, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We studied the various needs that WikiProjects have, and have come up with some ideas for our first round of WikiProject tool development. These include:
An automatically updated WikiProject directory that surfaces WikiProject-related metrics and automatically generates a list of active participants and potential members;
A lightweight, optional alternative to WikiProject banners, featuring an option to quickly send a message to the named WikiProjects;
A tool that bootstraps WikiProjects; and
A worklist generation script for WikiProjects
We are now looking for volunteer coders to work on these projects. If you are interested in developing these tools, or if you would to volunteer for other tasks, check out our new volunteers portal. Thank you for your help!

I Prod'd the Thomas Vasquez since I thought he did not meet the requirements. I am guessing you are counting Strikeforce Challengers which I understood to be separate from Strikeforce and more in line with TUF events. In the article it is listed as amateur and under ShoMMA if you click on the event. I looked but could not find the discussion about this, there was one, it might have been under another AfD debate. I put back the notability tag but would like an opinion before taking it further.Peter Rehse (talk) 10:22, 21 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It is entirely possible that there was a conversation stating that amateur fights do not count toward notability. If that's the case we should update WP:MMABIO. Currently it does not say that individual fights all need not be amateur, only that "Amateur MMA fighters are not considered notable". Perhaps we should clarify that. Either way to imply that an athlete must be paid to be considered notable does not seem in line with the rest of Wikipedia:Notability (sports), both in the "This page in a nutshell" and in several sports individual listings it states that amateur sports count toward notability. Kevlar (talk) 15:41, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looking around some more I think most of the discussions revolved around the inclusion of TUF fights as top tier (ie. not part of UFC) with a week extension to Strikeforce Challengers who as with TUF don't fight the big boys. The TUF discussions are easy to find in the archive. In the end TUF finale fights were considered ok but others not and on reflection Strikeforce Challengers seems quite similar to TUF finals. Since I can't find cases were we have repetitive participation in Strikeforce Challengers I think I will let the matter drop and count them. Not sure how Carl Malenko got Prod'd - sorry about that.Peter Rehse (talk) 18:33, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be agreement on the MMA talk page that most, if not all, WSOF events are not notable. Feel free to put some of them up for AfD (especially those that haven't even occurred yet). That or redirect them to an omnibus article on WSOF events. I thought about putting some up, but then I remembered the abuse I took a few years ago in dealing with MMA articles. HiKevlar. The licensing of each image you see on Wikipedia is determined by it copyright status and not every image file you see on Wikipedia is licensed the same. Some files are licensed as public domain or licensed under a free licensed suitable for Wikipedia and these are often collectively referred to as "free images". Other files are licensed as non-free content because of their copyright status and these file are commonly referred to as "non-free images". Non-free image use is highly restricted and each use of such an an image must satisfy Wikipedia's non-free image use policy. One of these restrctions is WP:NFCC#9, which says that non-free content can only be used in the article namespace. Non-free content cannot be used (i.e., displayed) in the user namespace as explained in WP:UP#Non-free files which is why I have removed a number of such files from User:Kevlar/sandbox.
