I reviewed your changes and I agree with 80% of them. I only found one (heat gain to heat flux) where I think you changed the content. I think you trimmed a bit too much in the UHI section but I'd have to read the two versions again. You mentioned cutting deeper... I think you should be bold and follow your instinct. The page needs fresh eyes.
Hmmm... As far as the energy statistics go that was a lot of work on my part but I also realize the wording was tortuous. My goal with those statistics was to show specifically how and where solar energy can replace conventional energy. The US is a large country with many types of climates and they keep good energy statistics so they are an obvious choice of comparison. I'll see about condensing the info into to a table. I've finished my copyedit (apologies if it's a bit sloppy towards the end, I'm getting tired). My reasoning for changing to heat flux was that with an arbitrary area and timeframe flux is effectively equivalent to gain/loss. Feel free to change it back if you think it's inappropriate. I'd say the quality of the content is fine for trying for FA status. The main problem I'd have with it is that I personally feel that a lot of the content would be better placed in subarticles with only brief summaries on the Solar Energy page, however this would require very dramatic cuts to be made to the majority of the article, and that could only be done if the material removed could be suitable integrated into other articles (since the quality is so high it would be a shame to just delete it).
There's also a question of how far you should go with this - I can see valid arguments for leaving it almost the same length as it is now, but on the other hand there's a case to be made for stripping it down to only a couple of pages on technology at all, with all the detail in subarticles. I'm not sure which approach would be better. Others at an FAC may disagree with me completely, so I'd say you're not far away from a stage where you can submit it for FA and then work with the responses you get there.
On another note, I'm suitably impressed by the edits you've made since I did the ce. Looking at your revisions I kept thinking "that's a good idea - why didn't I think of that!" Adacore (talk) 16:59, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Your ce helped me look at the page freshly. I especially liked how you did the concentrating solar power section. I'll be trimming some more over the next few days. I know I've overdone the page with details and examples but one of the FA criteria is comprehensiveness eh. The longer I looked at the subject the more areas I realized should be included. I started thinking about why most of the houses in Riyadh and Santorini are white and how to put that on the page. For me, another issue is that there's a lopsided amount of attention on PV in the media and I don't want this to happen on the page. I think you're off to a great start here - and kudos for joining the woefully understaffed WP:LOCE, too. FAC reviewing is fun (although going through every point on that checklist properly takes hours, which I don't always have), and satisfying in that it seems to generate rapid and useful responses. Thank you so much for the note and for editing Solar Energy. I seem to have gotten in over my head temporarily. Yes, please say that I edited Brian Horrocks and remove it from the pile. I liked being a member of LoCE, and I may come back some day. I left only because I was trying to do GA reviews, peer reviews, research and writing, and copyediting for people who sent me notes unrelated to LoCE, and I couldn't begin to keep up. Om, om, om. Can you help?
I see you were listed as a participant in the League of Copy-Editors so it seems likely. The thing is the Military history wikiproject urgently needs prose pros to help with our best articles. Milhist covers a broad range of interesting and varied subjects from film to biography, battles to weaponry, and Roman emperors to twentieth-century dictators. In Milhist, A-Class has become the last port of call before FAC and we are looking for people to help identify prose and MoS issues at A-Class A-Class Reviews and help fix them prior to featured article candidacy. We also have a copy-editing section in our Logistics Dept and that can always use experienced copy-editors. For most of our articles, you don't need to be a specialist in the subject matter, just good with words.
This is an invitation for you to join a brand-new WikiProject that aims to improve the articles tagged for copy edit. This is pretty important to Wikipedia because there are now over 4,000 such articles, some of which need quite a bit of help. This is not a clone of the LOCE because we will not deal with requests for copy edits, but will happily make improvements to articles at our own pace. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.
We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up
Greetings from the Guild of Copy EditorsJuly 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.
Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Progress report
We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.
Statistics
54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.

The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.

This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.
Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

NEW!! In the week from Sunday 21 October to Saturday 27 October, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} belonging to selected project(s). For the first blitz, we'll start with WikiProject Olympics and WikiProject Albums and add more Projects to the blitz as we clear them. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.

However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.
