Which did he have- depression, or manic depression?

XXX encountered mention of Roethke exhibiting manic behaviors. Many people with recurrent episodes of major depression may best be diagnosed and treated as having bipolar disorder. However for the Roethke article, it would be best not to use the deprecated term "manic-depression" nor to give a medical diagnosis, but instead to write of nonspecific bouts of depression. This latter term, in lay use, covers a host of meanings. I'm modifying the article's text accordingly. Theodore Roethke suffered from Manic Depression, or bipolar disorder.
