Talk:Seediq language

Seediq vs. Truku

The article says Truku is another word for the Seediq language... but why is there a separate article for Truku then? --Unsound 14:06, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

很好 then :) --Unsound 14:55, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Truku is a dialect of Seediq. However, I'm thinking that if I simply assert that Truku is a dialect of Seediq, someone will take issue, since the Truku are a recognized tribe. Therefore, I need to line up several references. In fact, because I'm busy, it may take longer than I thought.. :-) --Ling.Nut 15:38, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Since they are both stubs, we may as well merge them together, don't you all think so?--Jerry 18:58, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There are big, big problems in this article. First of all, confusingly, there are two tribes called Truku. One is Truku Gorge Truku, who speak the Truku/Taroko language. It is called 太魯閣 (tài lǔ gé) in Mandarin. The other is a clan of Seediq people, who call themselves "Seejiq Truku". They speak a dialect of Seediq, called Truku Seediq, and are not the same as Truku/Taroko Gorge language. For example, to say “hunting" in Taroko, it is tmsamat, in Truku Seejiq it is bbuyu. Tnsamat is also used in Truku Seejiq, but not as frequent. You could say they are similar, but not mutually intelligible. As for Taroko being another name for Seediq, that is—I don't even know how anyone got there. The way to distinguish Truku Gorge language and Truku Seediq is by calling them "Taroko" and "Seejiq". Also, the population of the Truku clan of Seediq is erroneous, as it includes Truku Gorge people. Taivoan (talk) 16:09, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Therefore, I recommend we have two articles: one on the Seediq language, including the Truku Seejiq dialect, and one on the Truku Taroko Gorge language. In Chinese we call Truku Seejiq "德魯谷" (délǔgǔ), a different name from the Gorge Tribe even though it comes from the same word "Truku", but ultimately this is way less confusing.
