Practical aspects

It would be great if the article covered some of the practical aspects of fasting. For example, the article states: "Fasting on a long hot working day carries a small risk of dehydration." I'm not a doctor, but I would imagine that the issue of not drinking water throughout a work day in summer is more than a small risk. Especially in Africa or the Arabian Peninsula. Cleanup Template

Are you guys morons or just ignorant? Sawm is the arabic word for fasting. Whether its jewish arab or christian arab... Sawm is fasting and has nothing to do with islam.

What is wrong with this article? Let me count the ways...

Terrible English: Now I'm not going to point fingers at one person in particular although I would like to but before making an edit, can you at least check to make sure what you wrote makes gramatical sense?
Empty sections: One sentence does not make a section.
Red Links: Don't link to a page that does not exist. Make the page first and then link to it.
References to "Islamic fasting": "Islamic fasting" is observed on the of Ashura? Well thanks for clarifying that; I was under the impression that Jewish fasting was practiced on that Islamic holiday.
Islamic fasting on the Islamic month of Ramadan: Not only is that gramatically correct, it's redundant. Fasting during Ramadan will suffice.
Insufficient explanations: "One may aske a prayer, including a vow to fast if the prayer is accepted." Even if I were to correct the obvious grammar mistakes in that sentence, I still would have no idea what is being talked about there.

Proposed deletion of half of "Fasting while in polar region"

About two years ago, one-time anonymous user 41.97.109.106 added the first half of the section "Fasting while in polar region" see: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sawm&diff=next&oldid=620239789.

The statements are not at all backed up by the references given; in fact, none of the references given even remotely deal with the subject at hand. If no one has any objections, I will delete that anonymous user's "contribution". Akhooha (talk) 23:49, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unrelated statement in the Etymology section

I deleted the statement that says "Fasting is not unique to Islam, and has been practiced for centuries in connection with religious ceremonies by Christians, Jews, Baha'is, Confucianists, Hindus, Taoists and Jains" from the Etymology section, Because:

It has nothing to do with meaning or the origin of the word for 'fasting' in Arabic.
Such statement is not needed really, it should have been put in the article about the practice of fasting and not fasting in Islam.
The other similar articles about fasting in other religions didn't have any similar statement.

Why is it needed to emphasize the fact that fasting is practiced in other religions in this particular article?

Relevance of Introduction

As the article is about fasting as a practice as per Islamic jurisprudence, the introduction, almost wholly, seems irrelevant. There is not much need for the discourse about so many different religions which also have fasting as an established practice in them or about how fasting of sorts can also be used as a political weapon.
