Paracoccaceae is a family of bacteria in the order Rhodobacterales, class Alphaproteobacteria, and phylum Pseudomonadota. Its type genus is Paracoccus.[1] Members occur in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments; many have been isolated from low-salinity habitats and do not require sodium chloride for growth.[2]
Taxonomy
The family was historically classified under the name Rhodobacteraceae. Although that name was validly published, it is illegitimate under Rule 51b(1) of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes because its original circumscription included Hyphomonas, the type genus of the previously named family Hyphomonadaceae.[3]
Genome-based analysis separated the predominantly marine "Roseobacter clade" from the broadly circumscribed Rhodobacteraceae and placed it in the family Roseobacteraceae.[2] Paracoccaceae was subsequently validly published for the family containing Paracoccus, Rhodobacter, and related genera. LPSN treats Paracoccaceae as the correct name and Rhodobacteraceae as a heterotypic synonym.[4][1][3]

Phylogeny
The genus-level tree below was pruned from the 120-marker-protein reference tree of GTDB release R11-RS232.[5][6] GTDB retains the broader family name Rhodobacteraceae, and its generic assignments differ from those of LPSN.[7] Consequently, only genera with validly published and correct LPSN names that occur under the same genus name in GTDB are shown.[1]
