Masked Ward (Japanese: 朽仮面病棟; Kamen Byoto) is a 2020 Japanese mystery film directed by Hisashi Kimura based on the novel of the same name by Mikito Chinen.[2][3] It stars Kentaro Sakaguchi with Mei Nagano, Rio Uchida, and Noriko Eguchi. It was released theatrically on March 6, 2024 by Warner Bros. Japan.[4]
Shugo Hayami works as a physician at a nursing home that was formerly a mental health facility. A man wearing a pierrot mask breaks into the hospital one evening while Shugo Hayami is on night watch, and he is not by himself. Hitomi Kawasaki is accompanying him. The masked man shot her while she was a university student. Shugo Hayami is instructed to treat Hitomi Kawasaki by the masked man. He also kidnaps the hospital's sixty-four patients. Soon after, Hitomi Kawasaki and Shugo Hayami attempt to flee the hospital and come across enigmatic instances one by one.[5]
The film is based on the medical mystery novel of the same name by physician and author Mikito Chinen.[3] Regarding the adaptation, Chinen, who also co-wrote the film stated: "I am very happy that this is the first time my work has been adapted into a film. I hope that it will be a film filled with tension that will keep you on the edge of your seats."[4]
The film featured the song "As One" by rock band Uverworld as its theme song.[10]
Masked Ward was released theatrically on March 6, 2020 by Warner Bros. Japan. A stage greeting, originally scheduled a day after the premiere, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[11]
In its opening weekend, Masked Ward grossed ¥105 million from 77,000 admissions.[12] It has grossed US$5.11 million worldwide.[1]
