Huang Renjun (Chinese: 黃仁俊; born 23 March 2000), known mononymously as Renjun (Korean런쥔), is a Chinese singer based in South Korea. He debuted in August 2016 as a member of the South Korean boy band NCT through its fixed sub-unit NCT Dream.[1]

Early life and education

Huang Renjun was born in Jilin, China on 23 March 2000. He grew up bilingual in Mandarin and Korean.[2]

He graduated from Beijing Contemporary Music School alongside bandmate Chenle in 2020.[2]

Career

2016–2023: Debut with NCT Dream

In January 2015, he passed the SM Global Audition in Shenyang, consequently joining the company in July 2015. On 21 August 2016, he was announced as a member of the upcoming group NCT Dream. He debuted with NCT Dream on August 25, 2016 with "Chewing Gum".[3]

Renjun started appearing as a special guest DJ for TBS eFM 101.3MHz's "Akdong Seoul", a Chinese-language radio show, on 5 August 2019.[2] Originally on contract for a two month tenure, he was announced as a permanent DJ on 20 September 2019. The show aired every day from Monday to Friday. His last live broadcast was 8 October 2020.

On 20 May 2020, Renjun and Chenle's graduation song "A New Beginning" was released by Beijing Contemporary Music School on Chinese sites.[4]

Renjun made his debut in the sub-unit NCT U on 12 October 2020 with NCT's two-part second studio album, NCT 2020 Resonance, featuring on the single "From Home".[5]

On 26 September 2023, Renjun along with NCT members Chenle, Kun, and Xiaojun won the Recommended Popular Artist of the Year at the 2023 Weibo Music Awards.[6]

2024–present: Hiatus and return

On 20 April 2024, SM Entertainment issued a notice stating that Renjun had recently visited the hospital due to poor health and symptoms of anxiety, and that he would suspend activities for the time being, including the opening shows of NCT Dream's third concert tour The Dream Show 3: Dream( )scape, based on the medical staff's opinion that he needed sufficient rest. It was stated that he would focus on treatment and recovery.[7]

Four months later, on 9 August 2024, SM stated that Renjun's health had improved significantly and that he would participate in NCT Dream's debut English single "Rains in Heaven", but would still not participate in the American leg of the concert tour due to the medical team's opinion that it was too early for him to undertake a long-term performance schedule.[8]

On 7 October 2024, SM announced that Renjun would resume full activities after six months of hiatus.[9] He rejoined NCT Dream on tour at their Rotterdam stop on 30 October 2024.[10]

Philanthropy

In May 2017, Renjun together with fellow NCT Dream member Chenle volunteered with CJ Dream Classroom in Nanjing, which is part of a global social contribution program providing better cultural arts education opportunities for children of Chinese labourers.[11]
