Biswanath Mukherjee is an Indian-American academic and a Distinguished Professor of computer science at the University of California, Davis. He is recognized for his research in optical networking, including network architectures, algorithms, and communication protocols. He was named a Fellow of the IEEE in 2006.[1][2]

Early life

Mukherjee earned his Bachelor of Technology degree with honors from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 1980. He completed his Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Washington in 1987.[3] In the same year, he joined the University of California, Davis as a faculty member in the computer science department. He was promoted to professor in 1995 and was named Distinguished Professor in 2011.[4]

He held the Child Family Professorship at UC Davis from 1995 to 2000 and served as chair of the computer science department from 1997 to 2000.[5]

Career

Mukherjee has been active in professional service, serving as general co-chair of the IEEE/OSA Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) Conference in 2011, technical program co-chair of OFC in 2009, and technical program chair of IEEE INFOCOM in 1996.[citation needed]

He is editor of the Springer book series on Optical Networks and has served on the editorial boards of several journals, including IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking and IEEE Network.[6] He serves on the advisory board of IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials.[7] He has also guest-edited special issues for journals such as Proceedings of the IEEE, IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, and IEEE Communications.[8]

He was the first elected chair of the IEEE Communications Society Optical Networking Technical Committee.[citation needed] He was a founding board member (2002–2007) of IPLocks, Inc., a Silicon Valley startup company later acquired by Fortinet.[9][8] Mukherjee also served on the board of directors (2015–2018) of Optella, Inc., an optical components startup acquired by Cosemi, Inc.[10] He has also advised technology companies, including Teknovus (acquired by Broadcom).

He is the founder and president of Ennetix, Inc., a UC Davis–incubated startup developing AI-based network performance analytics and management software.[11]

Major contributions

  • Proposal and prototype for a network intrusion detection system (1990).[12]
  • Proposal and prototype for a filtering firewall (1990), now a common network security feature.[13]
  • Contributions to optical backbone network design, IP over optical, and virtualization.[14]
  • Proposal and prototype for dynamic bandwidth allocation in Ethernet optical access networks (2002).[15]
  • Proposal to integrate optical and wireless networks (2007).[16]
