Πυρηνικός σταθμός

Οι πυρηνικοί αντιδραστήρες, που περιβάλλονται από πύργους ψύξης, βρίσκονται εντός των σφαιρικών προστατευτικών περιβλημάτων

Ο πυρηνικός σταθμός, γνωστός και ως σταθμός παραγωγής πυρηνικής ενέργειας ή πυρηνικός σταθμός ηλεκτροπαραγωγής, είναι θερμοηλεκτρικός σταθμός στον οποίο πηγή θερμότητας αποτελεί ένας πυρηνικός αντιδραστήρας. Όπως είναι τυπικό για τους θερμοηλεκτρικούς σταθμούς, η θερμότητα χρησιμοποιείται για την παραγωγή ατμού που οδηγεί έναν ατμοστρόβιλο συνδεδεμένο με μια γεννήτρια που παράγει ηλεκτρική ενέργεια. Από το 2022, η Διεθνής Υπηρεσία Ατομικής Ενέργειας ανέφερε ότι υπήρχαν 439 πυρηνικοί αντιδραστήρες εν λειτουργία σε 32 χώρες σε όλο τον κόσμο.[1][2]

Οι πυρηνικοί σταθμοί χρησιμοποιούνται πολύ συχνά για βασικό φορτίο, καθώς το κόστος λειτουργίας, συντήρησης και καυσίμων βρίσκεται στο χαμηλότερο άκρο του φάσματος του κόστους.[3] Ωστόσο, η κατασκευή ενός σταθμού παραγωγής πυρηνικής ενέργειας διαρκεί συχνά πέντε έως δέκα χρόνια, η οποία μπορεί να προκύψει σε σημαντικό οικονομικό κόστος, ανάλογα με τον τρόπο χρηματοδότησης των αρχικών επενδύσεων.[4]

Οι πυρηνικοί σταθμοί έχουν αποτύπωμα άνθρακα συγκρίσιμο με εκείνο των ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας, όπως τα ηλιακά πάρκα και τα αιολικά πάρκα,[5] και πολύ χαμηλότερο από τα ορυκτά καύσιμα όπως το φυσικό αέριο και ο καφές άνθρακας. Παρά τις ορισμένες θεαματικές καταστροφές που έχουν συμβεί, οι πυρηνικοί σταθμοί είναι ο ασφαλέστερος τρόπος παραγωγής ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας.[6]
