Ο Μπίλι Πάουελ ήταν Αμερικανός κιμπορντίστας και συνθέτης της ροκ μουσικής, γνωστός ως μέλος του southern rock συγκροτήματος Lynyrd Skynyrd από το 1970 μέχρι τον θάνατο του, το 2009.

Βιογραφία

Ο Πάουελ, υιός αξιωματικού του αμερικάνικου ναυτικού, γεννήθηκε το 1952 στο Κόρπους Κρίστι και σε νηπιακή ηλικία, μετακόμισε στην Ιταλία με την οικογένεια του. Το 1960, ο πατέρας του πέθανε από καρκίνο και η μητέρα του με τα τρία παιδιά της επέστρεψαν στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, διαμένοντας στο Τζάκσονβιλ της Φλόριντα.

Έμαθε να παίζει πιάνο με ιδιαίτερα μαθήματα και ξεκίνησε την φοίτηση του στο γυμνάσιο Bishop Kenny High School, όπου γνώρισε τον Λέον Γουίλκισον και το 1970 μπήκε στο τοπικό κολέγιο σπουδάζοντας μουσική θεωρία. Την ίδια περίοδο, ξεκίνησε να εργάζεται ως μεταφορέας των Lynyrd Skynyrd, ενώ έπαιζε στους Alice Marr.[3] Παρέμεινε σε αυτή την θέση για δύο χρόνια, πριν ενταχθεί στην σύνθεση του συγκροτήματος.

Το 1973, οι Lynyrd Skynyrd κυκλοφόρησαν τον δίσκο "(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)", με μεγάλες επιτυχίες όπως τα "Gimme Three Steps", "Simple Man" και "Freebird".[4] Κατά την επόμενη τετραετία, το συγκρότημα αναδείχθηκε σε ένα από τα σπουδαιότερα του είδους του και ο κύριος εκπρόσωπος του southern rock, αλλά στις 20 Οκτωβρίου 1977, ένα αεροπορικό δυστύχημα κόστισε την ζωή στον τραγουδιστή Ρόνι Βαν Ζαντ και δύο ακόμη μέλη του σχήματος, οδηγώντας στην διάλυση των Lynyrd Skynyrd.[5]

Μετά από ένα μεγάλο διάλειμμα, ο Πάουελ συμμετείχε στον δίσκο "Rockin' into the Night" των .38 Special και σχημάτισε τους Alias μαζί με τον Γουίλκινσον, κυκλοφορώντας το άλμπουμ "Contraband".[6] Στην συνέχεια, έπαιξε σε δύο δίσκους των Rossington Collins Band, όπως και στο "Here, There & Back" των Allen Collins Band.[7]

Μετά την διάλυση των τελευταίων, έγινε μέλος των Vision το 1985, αλλά δύο χρόνια αργότερα οι εναπομείναντες μουσικοί των Lynyrd Skynyrd, με τον αδελφό του Ρόνι Βαν Ζαντ, Τζόνι, στο μικρόφωνο, επανενώθηκαν, παίζοντας για πρώτη φορά στο Charlie Daniels' Volunteer Jam.[8] Ακολούθησε μία περιοδεία, πριν ηχογραφήσουν το άλμπουμ "Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991".[9] Ο Πάουελ παρέμεινε στο συγκρότημα μέχρι το 2009, ενώ το 2007 συμμετείχε στο άλμπουμ "Rock n Roll Jesus" του Kid Rock, το οποίο ανέβηκε στην κορυφή του Billboard στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.[10]

Στις 28 Ιανουαρίου 2009, ο Πάουελ πέθανε αφού υπέστη καρδιακή προσβολή μέσα στο σπίτι του.[11] Η κηδεία του πραγματοποιήθηκε τρεις ημέρες αργότερα, με τον Kid Rock να τραγουδάει προς τιμή του. Οι Lynyrd Skynyrd αφιέρωσαν το τραγούδι "Gifted Hands" από τον δίσκο "God & Guns", στον Πάουελ.[12]
