Als Thoracotremata wird eine Untergruppe der Krabben bezeichnet, bei denen die Geschlechtsöffnung (Gonopore) bei beiden Geschlechtern im Bereich des thorakalen Sternums liegt. Sie bilden eine monophyletische Gruppe und werden auch als „höhere Krabben“ bezeichnet. Sie gehören mit den Heterotremata zu den Eubrachyura.[1] Bei männlichen Thoracotremata wird das achte Sternit vom Ejakulationsgang durchbohrt. Die Gonopore liegt nahe der Coxa des vierten Schreitbeins, an der Naht zwischen 7. und 8. Sternit oder in der Mitte des 8. Sternits (z. B. Quadratkrabben, Plagusiidae, Varunidae).[2] Bei weiblichen Thoracotremata liegt die Geschlechtsöffnung auf dem sechsten Sternit.[3]
