Stolperstein von Stresa

Der Stolperstein von Stresa ist dem Soldaten Giuliano Nicolini gewidmet. Die Gemeinde Stresa befindet sich in der italienischen Provinz Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Stolpersteine werden vom Kölner Künstler Gunter Demnig in weiten Teilen Europas verlegt. Sie erinnern an das Schicksal der Menschen, die von den Nationalsozialisten ermordet, deportiert, vertrieben oder in den Suizid getrieben wurden und liegen im Regelfall vor dem letzten selbstgewählten Wohnsitz des Opfers. Die italienische Übersetzung des Begriffes Stolpersteine lautet: pietre d’inciampo.

Der bislang einzige Stolperstein von Stresa wurde am 17. Januar 2016 verlegt.

März 1913 in Stresa geboren.^[1] Er absolvierte ein Studium der Agrartechnik und Önologie an der Königlichen Schule für Weinbau und Önologie in Alba. Er arbeitete im Familienbetrieb, einer Weinhandlung. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg diente er im Range eines Infanterieleutnants im 114. Maschinengewehrschützen-Bataillon der Grenzwache und nahm 1942 an Kämpfen in Albanien und Montenegro teil. Am 1. Januar 1943 wurde er zum Hauptmann befördert.^[2] Nach dem Waffenstillstand von Cassibile am 8. September 1943 zählte er zu jenen italienischen Soldaten, die nicht bereit waren den Krieg auf Seiten der ehemaligen deutschen Verbündeten fortzusetzen. Er wurde in Haft genommen und „es folgte eine via crucis in einer Reihe von Internierungs- und Konzentrationslagern“: Stalag 307 in Dęblin-Irena (im heutigen Polen), Wesuwe, Oberlangen und Stalag X-B in Sandbostel (alle in Niedersachsen), dann im Kriegsgefangenenlager Stalag XD 310.^[1] Im Februar 1945 widersetzten sich dort über 200 italienische Militärinternierte die Zwangsarbeit fortzusetzen und pochten auf die Einhaltung der Bestimmungen der Genfer Konvention für Kriegsgefangene. Als Strafe sollten 21 willkürlich ausgesuchte Gefangene erschossen werden. Daraufhin meldete sich Nicolini mit 43 weiteren Gefangenen als freiwilliger Todeskandidat. Die 44 Todeskandidaten wurden nicht erschossen, sondern in das Außenlager Unterlüß des KZ Bergen-Belsen gebracht. Giuliano Nicolini wurde dort drei Tage vor der Befreiung des Lagers am 6. April 1945 von einem ukrainischen Wachsoldaten zu Tode geprügelt.^[1] In den frühen 1950er Jahren wurde sein Leichnam exhumiert und am Kommunalfriedhof von Stresa bestattet. Postum erhielt er die Tapferkeitsmedaille in Silber. Am 25. April 1972 ehrte ihn die Stadt Mailand als „Märtyrer für die Freiheit“. 1974 anerkannte ihn das Parlament der Region Piemont als „Politischen Häftling in den NS-Konzentrationslagern und Kämpfer für die Freiheit“. Am 2. Juni 2015 wurde ihm postum die Medaglia d’onore ai cittadini italiani deportati e internati nei lager nazisti 1943-1945 verliehen, die Ehrenmedaille für italienische Staatsbürger, die in den Jahren 1943 bis 1945 in NS-Konzentrationslager deportiert und interniert waren.
