Die Seestachelbeere (Pleurobrachia pileus) gehört zu den Rippenquallen (Ctenophora). Sie kann bis zu 3 cm hoch werden und hat kugelige bis eiförmige Gestalt mit acht charakteristischen Längsrippen. Sie trägt zwei bis zu 75 cm lange Tentakel, mit denen sie Plankton fängt. Außerdem kann sie mit aufgesperrtem Mund direkt von der Wasseroberfläche Organismen fangen. Die Seestachelbeere gilt als kosmopolitisch, wobei ihr Vorkommen für die arktischen Gewässer nicht gesichert ist. Das Auftreten der Seestachelbeere ist stark von den Meeresströmungen abhängig und ihre Toleranz bezüglich Salinität und Temperatur ist so groß, dass sie sowohl das Eindringen ins Brackwasser der Ostsee als auch das Einfrieren toleriert.
