Hymenosoma ist eine Gattung der Krabben mit neun Arten.[1] Sie besiedeln sowohl Süß- und Brackwasser im Bereich von Flussmündungen als auch die Gezeitenzone bis in Tiefen von 37 m in der gemäßigten Klimazone Australasiens und im Süden Afrikas.[2]

Merkmale

Der Carapax von Hymenosoma wird bis zu 28 mm lang. Der für die Hymenosomatidae typische Randsaum ist rundlich achteckig. Das Rostrum (mittiger Stirnfortsatz) ist dreieckig, das Epistom kurz oder fehlend. Die fünf Somiten des Pleons und das Pleotelson (Verschmelzung aus sechstem Somit und Telson) sind bei beiden Geschlechtern frei beweglich. Die dritten Maxillipeden lassen eine große Lücke zum Mundraum offen. Die Finger der Schreitbeine sind nahezu gerade und am Beugerand unbewehrt oder mit Zähnen besetzt. Das erste Gonopodium hat eine kräftige Basis und läuft in ein komplex aufgebautes stumpfes Ende aus.[2]

Systematik

Zur Gattung gehören neun, als gesichert eingestufte Arten:[1]

Die Art Hymenosoma gaudichaudii Guérin, 1830 ist als fraglich eingestuft (taxon inquirendum).[1]
