Gorchestion Beirdd Cymru - wynebddalen argraffiad 1773

Blodeugerdd o farddoniaeth Gymraeg glasurol yw Gorchestion Beirdd Cymru. Fe'i cyhoeddwyd gan Rhys Jones o'r Blaenau yn y flwyddyn 1773. Oherwydd ei hymylon gwyn llydan cafodd y gyfrol ei llysenwi 'Y Bais Wen'. Mae'n un o'r blodeugerddi pwysicaf a mwyaf dylanwadol i'w chyhoeddi yn y Gymraeg erioed. Cafodd ei hargraffu gan Stafford Prys yn Amwythig.

Er gwaethaf diffygion testunol - yn bennaf am fod y golygydd yn gweithio heb fedru cymharu'r cerddi â chopiau sydd ar gael mewn llawysgrifau eraill - roedd y gyfrol yn gampwaith am ei gyfnod. Yn ogystal â detholiad o destunau o waith y Cynfeirdd, ceir detholiad da o waith y cywyddwyr, o Ddafydd ap Gwilym i Wiliam Llŷn.

Ei theitl llawn yw:

Gorchestion / Beirdd Cymru: / neu / Flodau / Godidogrwydd Awen. / Wedi eu lloffa, a'u dethol, allan o waith rhai o'r Awduriaid ardder- / choccaf a fu erioed yn yr Iaith Gymraeg.[1]

Fe'i cyflwynir i William Vaughan, ysgwier Cors-y-Gedol a Nannau (ger Dolgellau), a etifeddodd gasgliad anferth o hen lawysgrifau Cymraeg gan ei hendaid Robert Vaughan. Bwriad Rhys oedd dangos i'r byd peth o etifeddiaeth gyfoethog y Gymraeg a hefyd i godi safonau llneyddol ei ddydd trwy esiampl gwaith meistri mawr y gorffennol.

Er bod rhai o fawrion y byd ymhlith y tanysgrifwyr, fel y llenor Samuel Johnson, er gwaethaf y pris sylweddol ceir enwau nifer o bobl gyffredin yn y rhestr, yn feirdd, porthmyn, tafarnwyr, offeiriaid lleol, siopwyr a hyd yn oed garddwr ystâd Cors-y-Gedol.

Ail-gyhoeddwyd ac ehangwyd y Gorchestion yn 1864 dan olygyddiaeth Robert Elis (Cynddelw) a daeth y casgliad yn adnabyddus i genhedlaeth newydd o ddarllenwyr ac ysgolheigion.
