Die Siamese kat is ’n kortharige katras en een van die mees bekende Oosterse katrasse. Die kat se oorsprong is onseker, maar daar word geglo dat hulle van Thailand (voorheen Siam) af kom. In dié land is hulle een van verskeie inheemse katsoorte en word hulle witsjian mat (วิเชียรมาศ, "maandiamant") genoem. Die Siamese kat het in die 20ste eeu een van die gewildste rasse in Europa en Noord-Amerika geword.

Geskiedenis

Die kleurpunt-korthaarkat wat in die Weste as die "Siamees" bekend is, is een van verskeie katrasse van Siam wat beskryf en geïllustreer is in manuskripte met die naam Tamra Maew ("katgedigte"), wat volgens skatting in die 14de tot 18de eeu geskryf is.[1]

Daar word dikwels beweer dat die eerste keer wat die kat buite Asië gesien is, was in 1884 in Brittanje toe twee katte genaamd Pho en Mia daar aangekom het,[2] hoewel die Amerikaanse president Rutherford B. Hayes reeds ses jaar vroeër – in 1878 – ’n Siamese kat present gekry het.[3] In 1885 het Pho en Mia drie Siamese katjies gehad. Hulle en hul ouers is in dieselfde jaar in Londen tentoongestel. Ongelukkig is al drie katjies kort daarna dood.

Teen 1886 is nog ’n paar na Brittanje ingevoer. Hulle was langer en leniger as die vorige twee, hul koppe minder rond en hul ore was groter. Die katte het gou baie aanhangers gekry en in die volgende paar jaar is verskeie van hulle ingevoer en hulle het die teelbasis gevorm vir die ras in Brittanje. In hul vroeë jare in Brittanje is hulle die "koninklike katte van Siam" genoem, wat verslae weerspieël dat hulle voorheen net deur Siamese koninklikes aangehou is.[4]

Beskrywing

Ná geslagte van selektiewe teling het die lywe al hoe langer en fyner geword en die koppe al hoe nouer. Die gevolg is dat die moderne skoukat besonder lank en lenig is met lang, lenige bene en ’n lang, dun stert wat al hoe dunner word na die punt. Hulle het lang, wigvormige koppe met groot ore. Verder is hulle goed gespierd en die oë is amandelvormig. Die punt van die neus en punte van die ore moet ’n perfekte driehoek vorm. Die pels is kort, blink, sag, ferm en het geen onderlaag nie. Dit het die kenmerkende kleurpuntpatroon.

Siamese katte is gewoonlik sosiaal, liefdevol en intelligent. Hulle vorm dikwels ’n goeie band met een mens. Sommige katte miaau hard en baie, en dring aan op aandag. Hulle is aktief en spelerig, selfs wanneer hulle volwasse is.[5][6]
