Die ontdekking van die vier planete in data van die Kepler-ruimteteleskoop is in Oktober 2012 aangekondig.[6] Daaropvolgende metings van radiale snelheid het Kepler-89d se bestaan bevestig en aangedui dit is effens groter en swaarder as Saturnus.[7] In Oktober 2013 is die ander drie planete se bestaan ook bevestig.
In 2012 is ’n gedeeltelike oorgang van die tweede buitenste planeet deur die buitenste planeet waargeneem – dit was die eerste keer dat ’n planeet-planeet-oorgang voor ’n ster gesien is.[8][6]
