Dutton menyelesaikan program Doktor Filsafat (DPhil) di Universitas Oxford sebelum mengajar bahasa Arab di Fakultas Studi Oriental dari 1993 hingga 1995 di kampus tersebut. Ia kemudian berpindah mengajar ke program studi bahasa Arab dan Islam di Universitas Edinburgh dari 1995 hingga 2006, dan bahasa Arab di Universitas Cape Town dari 2006 hingga 2018.[2]
Penelitian
Penelitian Dutton tentang hukum Islam awal berfokus pada yurisprudensi Malik bin Anas dan penggunaan praktik-praktik masyarakat Madinah (amal ahl al-Madinah) sebagai sumber hukum.[3][4] Ia berpandangan bahwa selain Al-Qur'an, amal ahl al-Madinah merupakan otoritas yang dominan bagi Malik, bahkan lebih dominan daripada hadis.[5] Dengan menggunakan isu penempatan tangan saat salat, yaitu sadl vs qabd, Dutton membedakan antara sunah yang dilestarikan oleh amal dan sunah yang dilestarikan oleh hadis.[6]
Ia disebut telah memberikan "kontribusi yang signifikan bagi pemahaman kita tentang aktivitas hukum di masa awal Islam".[7]
