Istilah ini mencakup semua genera yang diterima secara umum, tetapi juga mencakup genera yang sekarang dianggap tidak sah, meragukan (nomen dubium) atau tidak diterbitkan secara formal (nomen nudum), beserta sinonim junior dari nama-nama yang lebih berdasar, begitu juga gener yang tidak lagi dianggap sebagai jenis pterosaurus. Saat ini, daftarnya mencakup 281 genera.
