Amu Darya (bahasa Persia: آمودریا, Āmūdaryā), juga disebut Oxus dan Sungai Amu, merupakan sungai utama di Asia Tengah. Sungai ini dibentuk oleh persimpangan Vakhsh dan sungai Panj. Pada zaman kuno, sungai dianggap sebagai batas antara Iran dan Turan.[2]

Nama Amu berasal dari nama kota yang bernama Āmul, sekarang dikenal sebagai Turkmenabat, di Turkmenistan modern.

Pada zaman dahulu, sungai ini dikenal sebagai Vaksu ke Indo-Arya. Di zaman klasik, sungai ini dikenal sebagai Oxus dalam bahasa Latin dan bahasa Yunani Ὦξος Oxos - turunan jelas Vakhsh - nama anak sungai terbesar sungai. Dalam sumber Persia Tengah periode Sassania sungai dikenal sebagai Wehrōd[2] (secara harfiah berarti "sungai baik").

sumber-sumber muslim Arab dan Abad Pertengahan menyebut sungai ini sebagai sungai Jayhoun (جيحون) yang berasal dari Gihon, nama alkitabiah untuk salah satu dari empat sungai dari Taman Eden.[3][4]

Amu Darya adalah sebuah sungai hampir secara terbalik, lama terkenal sebagai sumber oleh gletser kuat makan aliran tinggi di Knot Pamir di ujung timur Afghanistan Wakhan Corridor, dan berakhir tidak di laut tetapi ke gurun pasir Turkmenistan Kyzyl Kum, jauh di ujung historisnya dari Laut Aral pedalaman.
