Sianosis didefinisikan sebagai perubahan warna kulit atau selaput mukosa menjadi kebiruan atau keunguan karena jaringan yang berdekatan dengan permukaan kulit memiliki saturasi oksigen rendah. Berdasarkan penelitian oleh Lundsgaard dan Van Slyke,[1] gambaran ini terjadi jika terdapat kadar deoksihemoglobin sebesar 5.0 g/dL atau lebih besar.[2] Hal ini didasarkan pada perkiraan saturasi kapiler berdasarkan rata-rata pengukuran gas darah arteri dan vena perifer.[3] Sejak perkiraan kondisi hipoksia saat ini didasarkan pada pengukuran gas darah arteri atau oksimetri nadi, nilai ini mungkin terlalu tinggi, dengan bukti bahwa kadar deoksihemoglobin sebesar 2.0 g/dL telah menimbulkan sianosis.[4]

Istilah sianosis secara harfiah berarti penyakit biru atau keadaan biru. Istilah ini diambil dari warna sian, yang berasal dari kata kyanós, dalam bahasa Yunani berarti biru.[5]
