Selat Luzon (bahasa Filipina: Kipot ng Luzon) adalah selat antara Pulau Taiwan dan Luzon, Filipina. Selat tersebut menghubungkan Laut Filipina ke Laut China Selatan di Samudera Pasifik barat.[1][2]

Deskripsi

Selat Luzon kira-kira memiliki 250 kilometer (160 mi) yang terdapat sejumlah pulau yang dikelompokkan menjadi dua kelompok: Kepulauan Batanes di Provinsi Batanes dan Kepulauan Babuyan di Provinsi Cagayan, keduanya di Filipina.

Selat ini dibagi menjadi beberapa selat yang lebih kecil. Selat Babuyan memisahkan Luzon dari Kepulauan Babuyan, yang dipisahkan dari Kepulauan Batanes oleh Selat Balintang. Batanes dipisahkan dari Taiwan oleh Selat Bashi.

Selat ini merupakan suatu selat penting untuk pelayaran dan komunikasi. Banyak kapal dari Amerika menggunakan rute ini untuk menuju pelabuhan-pelabuhan Asia Timur yang penting. Banyak kabel komunikasi bawah laut yang melewati Selat Luzon ini. Kabel-kabel ini menyediakan data penting dan layanan telefoni ke Tiongkok, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Jepang, dan Korea Selatan.[3]

Beberapa gelombang samudra terbesar di dunia ditemukan di utara selat ini, kadang-kadang di atas 170 meter, berasal dari pasang surut air laut dan arus samudra. Gelombang atau arus ini berada di bawah air dan jarang menembus permukaan, sehingga tidak membahayakan pelayaran namun terkadang terlihat oleh satelit. Osilasi sebagian besar dipicu oleh punggung utara-selatan yang panjang yang menutupi hampir keseluruhan selat, kemudian diperkuat di bagian utara oleh sebuah punggung paralel kedua.[4] Kedalaman selat tersebut mencapai 3.500 m dan 4.000 kontur di jurang samudra utara-selatan di tepi bagian tengah dan barat daya.

Selat Luzon merupakan bagian dari rute invasi Jepang selama Perang Dunia II. Pada 8 Desember 1941 (hari yang sama ketika Jepang menyerang Pearl Harbor, karena Garis Tanggal Internasional), pasukan Kekaisaran Jepang mendarat di Batanes. Sampai dengan tanggal 10 Desember, mereka telah menduduki Camiguin de Babuyanes di Kepulauan Babuyan (jangan dikelirukan dengan provinsi pulau Camiguin di lepas utara Mindanao) dalam upaya yang segera ditinggalkan untuk mendirikan sebuah pangkalan pesawat amfibi, dan pada hari yang sama mendarat di Aparri, Cagayan di Luzon.

Selanjutnya, selama Perang Dunia Kedua, banyak kapal selam Amerika Serikat memburu konvoi Jepang yang melewati selat dalam perjalanan mereka dari Hindia Timur menuju Jepang.
