Tragedi Rostam dan Sohrab adalah salah satu di antara kumpulan hikayat dalam Kitab Syahnameh, Wiracarita Persia dari abad ke-10 Masehi, karya penyair besar Persia Firdausi. Hikayat ini meriwayatkan kisah tragis yang dialami tokoh utama, Rostam, dan puteranya, Sohrab.

Alur cerita

Suatu ketika, Rostam, salah seorang pendekar andalan Syah Kay Kāwus, mendapat firasat buruk dan memutuskan untuk menghilangkannya dengan pergi berburu. Sewaktu sedang beristirahat, kudanya yang dilepas mencari makan dicuri orang-orang Turan. Tatkala sedang menelusuri jejak kudanya yang lepas, ia memasuki wilayah kerajaan Samangan dan diundang bermalam di istana sebagai tamu Raja. Pada malam hari, Tahmina, Puteri Raja Samangan, yang jatuh hati pada Rostam dan kagum akan reputasinya, menyelinap ke kamar Rostam dan memohon diberikan keturunan darinya. Sebagai imbalan, Tahmina menjanjikan kembalinya kuda Rostam.

Rostam meninggalkan Samangan setelah menikahi Tahmina dan mendapatkan kembali kudanya. Sebelum berangkat, Rostam meninggalkan kelat bahunya yang bertatahkan sebutir permata oniks sebagai tanda mata untuk disimpan Tahmina. Jika anak yang dilahirkan Tahmina kelak seorang puteri, maka tanda mata itu itu harus digunakan untuk mengikat jalinan rambutnya. Jika yang lahir seorang putera, maka harus diikatkan pada lengannya. Sembilan bulan berlalu, Tahmina pun melahirkan seorang putera yang diberinya nama Sohrab.

Sohrab tumbuh seperkasa ayahnya. Dan karena rindu berjumpa dengan Rostam, Sohrab pun menghimpun bala tentara untuk memerangi Iran, melengserkan Kay Kāwus, dan menjadikan ayahnya sebagai Syah Iran. Afrasiyab, Raja Turan, mengetahui hal ini dan berniat memanfaatkannya demi keuntungannya sendiri. Ia berhasil membujuk Sohrab dengan tipu-daya dan hadiah berlimpah, sehingga bala tentara Samangan bergabung dengan bala tentara Turan dan maju bersama memerangi Iran.

Akhirnya, dimaklumkan perang baru antara Persia dan Turan. Bala tentara kedua pihak pun berhadap-berhadapan dan bersiap-siap menjelang pertempuran. Sohrab telah masyhur sebagai petarung terbaik di kubu Turan, sementara kubu Iran bergantung pada kehebatan Rostam. Ketenaran Rostam telah maju mendahului pemiliknya, dan menggentarkan bala tentara Turan. Tak seorang pun berani menghadapi Rostam, maka Sohrab pun maju melawan sang pendekar kenamaan Khorasan itu tanpa menyadari bahwa pria yang dihadapinya adalah ayahnya sendiri.

Di medan perang, Rostam dan Sohrab bertarung habis-habisan, tanpa tahu nama lawannya masing-masing. Sesudah pergumulan yang sangat lama dan berat, Rostam pun kelelahan, dan demi menjaga reputasinya, ia menikam Sohrab tepat pada jantungnya. Sohrab yang sekarat menyesali kemalangannya dan memperingatkan lawannya akan pembalasan dari Rostam bila tahu anaknya tewas dibunuh. Rostam terperanjat dan menyesali tindakannya setelah mendengar kata-kata Sohrab dan mengenali permata pada kelat bahu di lengan Sohrab yang dulu dititipkannya pada Tahmina.

Rostam berusaha menyelamatkan nyawa puteranya dengan mengirim utusan meminta obat penyembuh luka milik Kay Kāwus. Tetapi Kay Kāwus yang khawatir pada gabungan kekuatan ayah dan anak itu mengabaikan permintaan Rostam dan membiarkan Sohrab tewas. Hikayat ini ditutup dengan kisah perkabungan keluarga Rostam dan besarnya dukacita yang diderita Puteri Tahmina hingga ajal menjemputnya.[1]
