Abdul Rashid bin Mohd Sidek atau lebih dikenal Rashid Sidek (lahir 8 Juli 1968 di Banting, Selangor, Malaysia) adalah mantan pemain dan pelatih bulu tangkis profesional Malaysia.

Kehidupan Pribadi

Rashid Sidek merupakan yang termuda dari lima bersaudara Sidek yang terkenal dalam perbulutangkisan Malaysia. Rashid dan saudara-saudaranya mengenal dunia bulu tangkis dari ayah mereka, Haji Mohd Sidek. Di bawah bimbingan ayahnya, Rashid dan saudara-saudaranya dilatih hingga menjadi juara. Rashid Sidek merupakan alumnus Victoria Institution (angkatan 1981-1985).[1]

Karier

Setelah menyelesaikan ujian sekolah menengah (Sijil Penilaian Menengah), ia diikutkan dalam skuad Project 1988/90 yang bertujuan mendapatkan kembali Piala Thomas. Pada Piala Thomas 1990, Rashid memiliki turnamen yang kuat tetapi Malaysia kalah di final karena China 1-4.

Ia meraih gelar Malaysia Terbuka selama tiga tahun berturut-turut pada tahun 1990, 1991, dan 1992. Sebagai hasilnya, ia dikenal oleh banyak orang sebagai "jago kandang" (secara harfiah, "pahlawan lokal"). Di final Piala Thomas 1992, ia mengalahkan Ardy Wiranata dan memberi poin pertama bagi Malaysia dengan kemenangan dramatis 3-2 atas rival utama Indonesia. Keberhasilan ini menjadi kejuaraan pertama yang dimenangkan oleh Malaysia dalam 25 tahun terakhir hingga hari ini.[2]

Prestasi Rashid menurun tiga tahun setelah kemenangan di Thomas cup 1992, tetapi ia bangkit kembali pada tahun 1996, ketika memenangkan Piala Asia dan Jerman Terbuka, kemudian mencapai final All England sebelum kalah dari Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen pebulu tangkis Denmark. Peringkatnya naik menjadi tiga teratas di dunia.[3] Rashid memenangkan medali perunggu di Olimpiade Atlanta 1996, setelah mengalahkan unggulan teratas, Joko Suprianto dari Indonesia dalam perjalanan ke semi-final. Lalu ia dikalahkan oleh Dong Jiong. Di playoff memperebutkan tempat ketiga, ia mengalahkan juara dunia 1995 dari Indonesia, Heryanto Arbi dalam tiga set, 5-15, 15-11, dan 15-6.
