Muhammad Ali vs. Floyd Patterson


Muhammad Ali vs. Floyd Patterson adalah dua pertandingan tinju profesional kelas berat antara Muhammad Ali dan Floyd Patterson. Pertandingan pertama digelar tanggal 22 November 1965 untuk memperebutkan gelar juara dunia kelas berat versi WBC dan Majalah Ring. Adapun pertandingan kedua digelar tanggal 20 September 1972 untuk memperebutkan gelar juara kelas berat versi North American Boxing Federation (NABF). Ali memenangkan dua pertandingan itu melalui technical knockout. Pertandingan pertama dihentikan pada ronde ke-12, sedangkan pertandingan kedua berakhir pada ronde ke-7.

Sebelumnya, gelar juara kelas berat milik Patterson direbut oleh Sonny Liston yang menang KO pada ronde pertama. Dalam pertandingan kedua, Patterson kembali kalah pada ronde pertama. Liston kemudian kehilangan gelarnya karena dikalahkan Ali. Sementara itu, Patterson memenangkan pertandingan melawan Eddie Machen dan George Chuvalo. Pada saat itu Patterson menjadi penantang utama gelar juara yang dipegang Ali.

Pada tanggal 22 November 1965 Patterson melawan Ali untuk pertama kalinya. Patterson kalah secara technical knockout pada penghujung ronde ke-12 meski sempat bersikap optimistis sebelum pertandingan. Bukannya mencari kemenangan KO dengan cepat, Ali justu mengolok-olok, mempermalukan, dan menyiksa Patterson sepanjang pertandingan itu hingga wasit menghentikan pertandingan pada ronde ke-12. Seorang jurnalis The New York Times mengeluh dan mengatakan bahwa melihat pertandingan itu seperti melihat seseorang yang "sedang menarik sayap kupu-kupu".[1]

Pada tanggal 20 September 1972 Patterson melawan Ali untuk kedua kalinya. Saat itu dia sudah berumur 37 tahun dan upayanya dihentikan pada ronde ke-7. Pertandingan itu menjadi pertandingan terakhir Patterson meskipun dia tidak pernah mengumumkan pensiun.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
