Metode pembentukan stempel huruf tekan merupakan alat bantu yang digunakan dalam dunia tipografi tradisional untuk memotong cetakan huruf pada seutas besi sebagaimana langkah paling awal dalam membuat cetakan huruf yang berbahan dasar besi.[1] Penekan besi dibentuk sedemikian rupa untuk membuat hasil stempel yang mirip dengan huruf yang diinginkan. Hasil dari pencetakan huruf tersebut juga dinamai sebagai matriks.[2] Membentuk cetakan huruf dengan metode ini memerlukan keahlian tinggi dan juga kesabaran dan praktek. Seringkali para pembuat desain dari suatu cetakan huruf tidak akan mau direpotkan dengan memotong cetakan huruf itu sendiri.
Desain umum dari cetakan huruf biasanya berupa bidang 2 dimensi, akan tetapi, penekan yang digunaka memiliki kedalaman untuk menjadi faktor penentu dari penampakan matriks yang akan dihasilkan. Selain itu, faktor lain seperti sudut penggunaan penekan juga akan sangat berpengaruh pada penampakan huruf pafa halaman terkait. Oleh sebab itu, sudut dari sisian penekan seringkali selaras satu dengan yang lainnya.
