Layanan sirkulasi adalah salah satu layanan yang ditawarkan oleh perpustakaan. Layanan sirkulasi mencakup berbagai kegiatan yang berkaitan dengan peminjaman, pengembalian, dan perpanjangan bahan pustaka. [1] Layanan sirkulasi bertujuan untuk memastikan bahwa koleksi perpustakaan dapat diakses oleh sebanyak mungkin pengguna, sesuai dengan peraturan dan prosedur yang telah ditetapkan. Terdapat layanan sirkulasi yang bersifat luring, daring, dan campuran. Layanan sirkulasi luring dilakukan secara tatap muka. Layanan sirkulasi daring melibatkan penggunaan perangkat digital dan internet. Layanan sirkulasi campuran merupakan sistem layanan sirkulasi yang mengadopsi sistem luring dan daring.
Sistem peminjaman Browne ditemukan oleh Nina E. Browne, seorang pustakawan dari Library Bureau Boston pada akhir abad ke-19. Dalam sistem ini setiap anggota perpustakaan mendapatkan tiket pinjaman sesuai dengan aturan perpustakaan. [2]
Sistem peminjaman Newark dikembangkan pada tahun 1896 oleh John Cotton Dana, seorang pustakawan di Perpustakaan Umum Newark, New Jersey. [3] Proses peminjaman dengan sistem ini anggota perpustakaan diberikan kartu peminjaman yang mencakup informasi seperti nama, alamat, nomor pendaftaran, tanggal kedaluwarsa kartu anggota, tanda tangan anggota, serta kolom untuk nomor panggil buku dan tanggal pengembalian. Kartu anggota menjadi syarat dokumen yang wajib dibawa saat meminjam atau mengembalikan buku di perpustakaan. [4]
Ditemukan pada tahun 1929 oleh Ralph A. Ulveling, pustakawan Perpustakaan Umum Detroit. Peminjaman ini dikenal sebagai sistem peminjaman sendiri karena peminjam menuliskan nomor anggotanya sendiri pada kartu buku, menghemat waktu petugas peminjaman. Sistem ini mirip dengan Sistem Peminjaman Browne, tetapi slip batas waktu kembali digantikan oleh kartu yang diberi tanggal terlebih dahulu dan dimasukkan ke dalam kantong kartu buku. Kartu peminjam digantikan dengan kartu identitas. [2]
Dalam kegiatan pengembalian petugas yang bertanggung jawab di perpustakaan perlu memperhatikan tenggat waktu peminjaman bahan pustaka. Setelah pengecekan, petugas melakukan pencatatan atas pengembalian tersebut dalam sistem manajemen yang digunakan di perpustakaan, baik secara luring maupun daring.
