Elazığ (pengucapan bahasa Turki: [eˈlazɯː][3]), sebelumnya Mamuretülaziz, adalah sebuah kota di Anatolia Timur, Turki, dan pusat administrasi Provinsi Elazığ. Terletak di lembah Eufrat teratas. Dataran di mana kota memanjang memiliki ketinggian 1.067 meter (3.501 kaki).

Elazığ awalnya dikembangkan pada tahun 1834 sebagai perpanjangan dari kota bersejarah Harput, yang terletak di atas bukit dan sulit diakses di musim dingin.

Etimologi

Kota kuno dan benteng Harput terletak sekitar lima kilometer (3,1 mil) dari Elazığ modern; namanya berarti "benteng batu" dalam bahasa Armenia dan pada masa Kekaisaran Romawi Timur disebut Charpete (Χάρπετε).

Pada abad ke-19, di bawah pemerintahan Mahmud II, gubernur Reşid Mehmed Pashame mulai perluasan Mezre, sebuah pinggiran kota yang terletak di dataran di bawah Kharput. Selama masa pemerintahan Sultan Abdülazîz, barak militer, rumah sakit dan rumah gubernur dibangun untuk mengakomodasi kursi vilâyet baru (provinsi). Kota ini berganti nama menjadi "Mamuretülaziz" (Turki Utsmaniyah: معمورة العزيز dibuat makmur oleh Aziz di Turki Utsmaniyah) pada tahun 1866 pada kesempatan peringatan lima tahun penobatan Sultan Abdülaziz, meskipun ia bukan pendiri awal. Belakangan kota ini dikenal sebagai "Elâzîz" karena kemudahan pengucapannya. Pada 17 November 1937, Presiden Mustafa Kemal Atatürk mengubah nama kota menjadi "El'azik". Namun, karena ini sulit diucapkan dalam bahasa Turki, pada 10 Desember 1937 pemerintah mengubah nama kota menjadi bentuk akhirnya, "Elazığ".
