Mahmud II

Mahmud II (bahasa Turki Utsmaniyah: محمود ثانى Mahmud-u s̠ānī, محمود عدلى Mahmud-u Âdlî; bahasa Turki: İkinci Mahmut; 20 Juli 1785 - 1 Juli 1839) adalah sultan ke-30 dari Kesultanan Utsmaniyah dari 1808 sampai kematiannya pada tahun 1839.

Pemerintahannya diakui untuk reformasi administrasi, militer, dan fiskal yang ekstensif yang dia terapkan, yang memuncak dalam Keputusan Tanzimat ("reorganisasi") yang dilakukan oleh anak-anaknya Abdul Mejid I dan Abdul Aziz. Sering digambarkan sebagai "Pyotr yang Agung dari Turki",[1] reformasi Mahmud termasuk penghapusan 1826 korps Janissary konservatif, yang menghilangkan hambatan besar bagi reformasi dirinya dan para penerusnya di Kesultanan. Reformasi yang dia lakukan ditandai dengan perubahan politik dan sosial, yang pada akhirnya akan mengarah pada kelahiran Republik Turki modern.[2]

Terlepas dari reformasi domestiknya, pemerintahan Mahmud juga ditandai oleh pemberontakan nasionalis di Serbia dan Yunani yang dikuasai Utsmaniyah, yang menyebabkan hilangnya wilayah yang signifikan bagi Kesultanan menyusul munculnya negara Yunani yang merdeka.

Selain itu, di kancah pemerintahan dalam negeri, Mahmud juga menerapkan kebijakan Westernisasi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari; seperti gaya berpakaian, musik, dan lain sebagainya.
