Carmel Budiardjo (1973)

Carmel Budiardjo (18 Juni 1925 – 10 Juli 2021) adalah warga negara Britania Raya yang menikah dengan orang Indonesia yang dijumpainya di Praha, Cekoslowakia, ketika ia bekerja dengan Perhimpunan Mahasiswa Internasional pada 1950. Saat itu pemuda-pemuda Indonesia baru saja menghirup udara kebebasan setelah perjuangan merebut kemerdekaan dari tangan Belanda. Carmel lulus dari Universitas London dalam bidang ekonomi pada tahun 1946.

Pada 1951 Carmel pindah ke Indonesia bersama suaminya. Mula-mula ia bekerja untuk Departemen Luar Negeri RI dan Himpunan Sarjana Indonesia. Melalui organisasi ini, ia terkait erat dengan Partai Komunis Indonesia.

Setelah peristiwa G30S pada tahun 1965, Budiardjo, suami Carmel, ditahan oleh pemerintahan Suharto selama 12 tahun. Tak lama kemudian Carmel sendiri pun dijebloskan ke penjara selama tiga tahun tanpa pernah diadili. Pada tahun 1971, Carmel dideportasi ke Inggris.

Pada 1973 Carmel bersama dengan sejumlah temannya mendirikan TAPOL, sebuah organisasi yang dibaktikan untuk membela para tahanan politik dan hak-hak asasi manusia di Indonesia. Nama organisasinya sendiri, TAPOL, adalah akronim dari tahanan politik.

Hingga sekarang, TAPOL, dengan dukungan beberapa orang staf saja dan suatu jaringan relawan yang luas, menerbitkan Buletin TAPOL yang diterbitkan secara teratur dua bulan sekali, tanpa interupsi. Tujuan TAPOL pertama-tama adalah mengadakan kampanye demi pembebasan ratusan ribu orang tahanan politik yang dipenjarakan atas tuduhan sebagai anggota atau simpatisan Partai Komunis Indonesia. Namun kampanye TAPOL diperluas setelah sejumlah mahasiswa Indonesia ditahan setelah berbagai unjuk rasa pada 1974 dan 1978.

Pada Agustus 1975, TAPOL mengeluarkan peringatan bahwa penyerangan Indonesia ke Timor Timur akan mengakibatkan pertumpahan darah dan terror. Penyerangan itu terjadi empat bulan kemudian.

Pada tahun 1980-an, Buletin TAPOL menerbitkan banyak wawancara terinci dengan para pemimpin perlawanan di wilayah Papua Barat, para korban pelanggaran hak asasi manusia di Timor Timur, dan para aktivis hak-hak asasi manusia di Indonesia.

Selain menerbitkan bulletin dan Laporan Berkala, TAPOL juga menerbitkan sejumlah buku, antara lain, An Act of Genocide: Indonesia’s Invasion of East Timor (Genosida: Penyerangan Indonesia atas Timor Timur) (1979), West Papua: The Obliteration of a People (Papua Barat: Pemusnahan Suatu Bangsa) (1983), dan Indonesia: Muslims on Trial (Indonesia: Orang-orang Muslim yang Diadili) (1984).

Pada 1995, sebuah organisasi yang berbasis di Jepang, International Federation for East Timor (IFET), menominasi Carmel Budiardjo untuk The Right Livelihood Award.

Pasangan Budiardjo dan Carmel mempunyai dua orang anak, Tari dan Anto.

Carmel meninggal dunia pada 10 Juli 2021 di London, Inggris.[1]
