本屬由瑞典動物學家第七代阿普爾加思從男爵威廉·渣甸（英语：Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet）及普里多·約翰·塞爾比（英语：Prideaux John Selby）於1830年時建立。[5]其模式種由英國動物學家喬治·羅伯特·格雷後續於1840年指定為赤须夜蜂虎。[1][6]其屬名Nyctyornis來自古希臘語的νυκτὶ（羅馬化：nukti-，意指「晚上、夜間的」）及ὄρνις（羅馬化：ornis，意指「鳥」）組成。[7]

形態特徵

本屬鳥類是體型較大的蜂虎，其中蓝须夜蜂虎更是當中體型最大的蜂虎，其體型可達31—34公分，重量可超過80公克。[3]:242[8]:287其特徵為沒有貫穿於眼部的條紋，這是蜂虎科下其他兩屬鳥類都擁有的特徵，而喉嚨的羽毛則形成了類似鬍鬚的結構。[4][8]:292本屬的鳥類捕食時飛行動作不如其他蜂虎優雅，往往是在空中單獨追逐著黃蜂、胡蜂或虎頭蜂，其他時間則蹲坐於樹枝上不動；而其叫聲也較類似於佛法僧科的鳥類而不接近其他蜂虎。[3]:241-244[8]:287
