Демони хапають Думузі відбувати покарання у пеклі за діяння Інанни

Думузі, в Шумері, був, за шумерським Списком царів п'ятим царем у легендарній період допотопних часів. У списку далі говориться, що Думузі правив протягом 36 тисяч років.

«Думузі» також присвячено декілька епічних поем в шумерській літературі. Проте він описаний в цих табличках як король Уруку, який правив після Потопу, між Лугалбандою і Гільгамешем.

Думузі згадується в таких міфічних творах:

  • Інанновий спуск до пекла: Інанна, спустившись в пекло, одержала дозвіл повернутися, але демони наполягали, щоб вона замінила себе іншою людиною. Вона вмовляє демонів прийняти правителів Кавказу і Бад-тібіру, які сидять у багнюці та ганчір'ї. Проте, коли вони приходять в Урук, вони знаходять Думузі сидячим в палацовій розкоші, захопюють його відразу ж, і беруть його в підземне царство як замінника Інанни.
  • Думузі і Нештіана: Інанна передає Думузі демонам, як свою заміну, але він тікає в будинок своєї сестри, Нештіани. Демони переслідують Думузі там, і врешті знаходять його, коли він переховувався на пасовищі.
  • Думузі і його сестра: фрагментарно. Сестра Думузі, здається, в траурі від його смерті.

Божество

Пізніше вірші та гімни хвали Думузі вказують, що з часом його стали вважати божеством, попередником вавилонського бога Таммуза. У шостій таблиці з Епосу Гільгамеша, Гільгамеш дає відсіч Іштар (Інанні), нагадуючи їй, що вона вдарила Таммуза, «коханого [її] молодості», оголосивши, що він повинен "тримати плач з року в рік ". Зображений як птах з перебитим крилом (allallu-птиця).
