Batı çitlembiği (Celtis occidentalis)

Çitlembik (Celtis), yaklaşık 60-70 tür barındıran, her yıl yaprak döken bir ağaç cinsidir. Kuzey Yarıkürenin ılıman iklime sahip bölgelerine yayılmış, Güney Avrupa, Güney Asya ve Doğu Asya, Güney ve Orta Kuzey Amerika ve Güney ve Orta Afrika'da bulunan bir bitkidir. Genellikle orta büyüklükte ağaçlardır, boyları 10-25 metre uzunluğundadır, nadiren 40 metre uzunluğa ulaşabilirler.

Eskiden Ulmaceae familyası veya kendi familyası olan Celtidaceae'ye yerleştirilse de, APG (Angiosperm Phylogeny Group) tarafından yapılan genetik analizler sonucu Cannabaceae familyasına yerleştirmenin en uygun olduğu ortaya çıkmış ve cins bu familyaya yerleştirilmiştir.

Basit yaprakları yaklaşık 3–15 cm uzunluğunda, yumurta şeklinde, sivri uçlu ve kenarları tırtıklıdır.

Meyvesi sert çekirdekli-eriksi, 6–10 mm çapındadır ve birçok hayvan türü tarafından yenilebilir; kuru ama tatlı bir tada sahiptir.

Bazı türleri süs ağacı olarak yetiştirilmekte ve susuzluğa karşı dayanıklılığı için tercih edilmektedir.

İstanbul'da bu ağaca "çitlenbik" denir. Ancak, Akdeniz ve Ege bölgelerinde "çitlenbik" adı Pistacia terebinthus için kullanılır. Çukurova'da bu ağaca "dardağan" adı verilir. Hekimhan, Arguvan (Arguvan Kirazı), Malatya ve Sivas dolaylarında bu ağaca "Dağın" adı verilmektedir.
