Remingtonocetidae, Orta Eosen'de Hindistan ve Pakistan'da yaşamış bir arkaik balina familyasıdır.[1] Remingtonocetidae'nin en eski temsilcileri, Ambulocetus ile aynı fosil bölgelerinde bulunur, ancak en büyük remingtonocetid çeşitliliği, 48 ila 41 milyon yıl önce Hindistan ve Pakistan'daki daha genç kayalardan bilinmektedir. Toplamda, kafatası uzunluğunun yaklaşık üçte ikisini oluşturan uzun bir burun ile karakterize edilen 6 remingtonocetid cinsi vardır.[2]

Açıklama

Kutchicetus'un kafatası

Remingtonocetidler, balinaların en eski ve en ilkel grubu olan archaeoceti'ye aittir. Bazı özellikleri (iyi gelişmiş bacaklar) nedeniyle şüphesiz arkaik balinalara dahil olmalarına rağmen, bu hayvanlar diğer archaeocet ailelerinde (uzun yüz gibi) bulunmayan özelliklere sahipti. Bilinen cinsler arasında: Rayanistes, Remingtonocetus, Dalanistes, Andrewsiphius, Kutchicetus ve Attockicetus bulunur.[3]

Morfoloji

Remingtonocetidlerin iskeletleri son derece ilkeldi. Karada hareket etmeye uygun, hala iyi gelişmiş dört bacakları vardı. Ambulocetus gibi diğer Archaeocetlerle karşılaştırıldığında, bu hayvanların daha küçük göz çukurları ve uzun burunları vardı. Genel olarak, bu hayvanların görünüşü, muhtemelen son derece uzun bir burnu olan bir su samuruna benziyordu.[3]

Boyutlarının Pakicetidler ile Ambulocetidler arasında olduğu düşünülmektedir. Burun delikleri alınlarına yakın yerleştirilmiş haldeydi. Gözleri küçüktü ve iç kulakları su altı yaşamına daha iyi uyumluydu.[4]

Taksonomi

Remingtonocetinae ve Andrewsiphiinae

2009'da Thewissen ve Bajpai, Remingtonocetidleri iki ana gruba ayırdı: Remingtonocetinae ve Andrewsiphiinae.[5] Ancak grup içindeki ilişkiler belirsizdir ve bazı yazarlar tarafından 2009 hipotezi kabul edilirken[6] bazıları tarafından kabul edilmemiştir.[7][8]
