Magister militum

Magister militum, Roma İmparatorluğu'nda ve cumhuriyet döneminde bugünün genelkurmay başkanına denk gelen askerî rütbeydi. İmparatordan veya konsülden sonra askeri alanda en yetkili rütbe magister militumdur. Roma İmparatorluğu'nun ikiye bölünmesinden sonra her iki imparatorlukta da bu rütbe sistemi devam etmiştir. Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu'nun son dönemlerinde imparatorların bu rütbeyi bizzat kendilerine verdikleri görülmüştür.

Meşhur magister militumlara örnek olarak Batı Roma İmparatorluğu'nu Attila'dan kurtaran Flavius Aethius gösterilebilir. Flavius Aethius son namlı ve büyük Roma generalidir.
