Demonim

Demonim, belirli bir yerin sakinlerini ya da yerlilerini tanımlamak için söz konusu yerin adından türetilmiş sözcüktür.[1] Demonimlere örnek olarak nüfus kaydı İstanbul'da olan bireyler için İstanbullu, Çin'deki yerli halk için Çinli, Svahili sahili yerlileri için Svahili ya da Vasvahili, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri için Amerikalı gibi ifadelerin kullanılması verilebilir. Etnik gruplara verilen adlandırma olan etnonim ile karıştırılmamalıdır. Örneğin bir etnonim olarak kullanılabilen Kazak sözcüğü Kazaklara atıfta bulunurken, Kazakistanlı sözcüğü tüm Kazakistan halkını kapsar.[2]

Sözcük kökeni Grekçe halk ya da kabile anlamına gelen δῆμος (dêmos) ile ad anlamındaki ὄνυμα (ónuma) sözcüklerinin birleştirilmesine dayanmaktadır ve 1990'larda popülerize edilmiştir.[3]
