Paglalarawan ng pag-aani sa pahinang kalendaryo ng Agosto ni Reyna Mary Psalter (fol. 78v), ca. 1310

Ang Agosto ay ang ikawalong buwan ng taon sa mga kalendaryong Huliyano at Gregoryano. May haba itong 31 araw.[1]

Sa Timog Emisperyo, ang Agosto ay ang kapanahunang katumbas ng Pebrero sa Hilagang Emisperyo. Sa Hilagang Emisperyo, pumapatak ang Agosto sa kapanahunang tag-init. Pumapatak naman sa Timog Emisperyo ang Agosto tuwing kapanahunang tag-niyebe. Sa maraming bansa sa Europa ang Agosto ay pistang buwan para sa karamihan ng mga manggagawa. Maraming pistang panrelihiyon ang nagaganap tuwing Agosto noong sinaunang Roma.[2]

Nangyayari ang ilan pag-ulan ng bulalakaw sa Agosto. Tuwing Agosto ang Kappa Cygnids, na iba't iba ang petsa kada taon. Tuwing maagang Hulyo hanggang mga Agosto 10 ang pag-ulan ng bulalakaw na Alpha Capricornids, at nagaganap ang Katimugang Delta Aquariids mula sa kalagitanaan ng Hulyo hanggang kalagitnaan ng Agosto, na may mga araw ng tugatog na nagbabago taon-taon. Napakainam na pagmasdan ang kumpol na bituin na Messier 30 tuwing Agosto.

Sa mga aborihen ng Kapuluang Canarias, lalo na sa Guanches ng Tenerife, natanggap ng buwan ng Agosto sa pangalan ng Beñesmer o Beñesmen, na pistang pag-aani din tuwing Agosto.[3][4]

Orihinal na ipinangalan ang buwan bilang Sextilis sa Latin dahil ito ang ika-6 na buwan sa orihinal na sampuhang-buwan ng kalendaryong Romano sa ilalim ni Romulo noong 753 BC, na Marso ang unang buwan ng taon. Noong mga 700 BC, ito ang naging ikawalong buwan nang naidagdag ang Enero at Pebrero sa taon bago ang Marso ni Haring Numa Pompilio, na binigyan din ng 29 araw. Dinagdag ni Julio Cesar ang dalawang araw nang nilikha niya ang kalendaryong Huliyano noong 46 BC (AUC 708), na binigyan ito ang makabagong 31 araw na haba.

Noong 8 BC, pinalitan ang pangalan ng buwan bilang parangal kay Emperador Augusto.[5] Sang-ayon sa Senado konsulto na binanggit ni Macrobio, pinili niya ang buwan na ito dahil sa panahon ito naganap ang ilang niyang dakilang tagumpay, kabilang pananakop ng Ehipto.[6] Sinasabi ng karaniwang inuulilt na alamat na mayroong 31 araw ang Agosto dahil nais ni Augusto na tumbasan ang kanyang buwan sa haba ng Hulyo ni Julio Cesar, subalit imbento lamang ito noong ika-13 dantaon na iskolar na si Johannes de Sacrobosco. Sa katunayan, mayroon nang 31 araw ang Sextilis bago pa man napalitan ang pangalan nito, at hindi ito pinili dahil sa haba nito.[7][8]

Ang mga birthstone o batong-kapanganakan ng Agosto ay peridoto, sardonise, at espinela.[9] Ang bulaklak-kapanganakan nito ay gladiyolus o amapola, na nangunguhulugang ganda, tibay ng karakter, pag-ibig, kasal at pamilya.[10] Ang simbolong sodyak ng Kanluran signs are Leo (hanggang Agosto 22) at Virgo (mula Agosto 23 pataas).[11][12]
