Systémová biológia je vedecký smer v biológii využívajúci prístupy ďalších vied, predovšetkým bioinformatiky, biochémie, chémie, informatiky a matematiky . Zaoberá sa štúdiom biologických funkcií a mechanizmov vznikajúcich následkom komplexných interakcií v biologických systémoch.

Základnou myšlienkou je komplexný pohľad, opak redukcionizmu (ktorý je prevládajúcou paradigmou napríklad v molekulárnej biológii), teda predpoklad, že systém je viac ako súčet jeho častí. Organizmus či jeho časť (tkanivo, bunka, organela) je chápaný ako komplexný systém. Predmetom záujmu sú potom interakcie medzi komponentami tohto systému a jeho emergentné vlastnosti, teda také, ktoré nemôžu byť vysvetlené len na základe súčtu vlastností komponent.

Systémová biológia pracuje s veľkým množstvom biologických dát, začala sa prudko rozvíjať po roku 2000 vďaka rozvoju technológií pre získavanie genomických a proteomických dát a zvýšenia výpočtového výkonu.

Systémová biológia často pracuje s modelmi, ktoré sú vytvárané matematickými a informatickými prístupmi na základe biologických dát, ktorých vlastnosti sú následne porovnávané s vlastnosťami živých systémov. Vyžaduje preto úzky kontakt znalostí z niekoľkých odborov.

Modely v systémovej biológii

Cieľom modelovania je vytvoriť taký model biologického systému, na ktorom bude možné uskutočňovať tzv. in silico experimenty. Modelujú sa rôzne pohľady na organizmus a jeho časti. Predmetom záujmu sú predovšetkým:
