Kongo je tretia najvodnatejšia rieka sveta (priemerný prietok pri ústí 41 800 m³), druhá najdlhšia rieka Afriky (4 700 km) a jej povodie je druhým najväčším na svete (3 680 000 km²).

Rieka a väčšina jej prítokov preteká Konžským dažďovým pralesom, ktorý je (po Amazonskom pralese) druhým najväčším tropickým dažďovým pralesom na svete.

Rieka tvorí prirodzenú hranicu medzi Kongom a Konžskou demokratickou republikou a v poslednej časti pred ústím severnú hranicu Angoly. Na jeho brehoch sa nachádzajú hlavné mestá Brazzaville a Kinshasa. Dolný tok Konga ponúka jedny z najlepších podmienok pre budovanie vodných elektrární na svete – s prevýšením 96 m na 15 km, by tu mohla vzniknúť svojou produkciou najväčšia sústava vodných elektrární na svete. Už vybudované elektrárne Inga I a Inga II slúžia prevažne Kinshase. Elektrárne boli vybudované pre provinciu Katanga, ktorá vďaka ťažbe medi, patrí medzi hospodárske základne krajiny. Bolo tu vybudované 1 800 km elektrického vedenia (700 000 V pre zníženie strát na tejto veľkej vzdialenosti). Vedenie neslúži k napájaniu oblasti medzi Kinshasou a Katangou – cieľom bolo zvýšiť kontrolu hlavného mesta nad touto oblasťou, ktorá sa už v minulosti snažila o odtrhnutie.

Vďaka znižovaniu produkcie baní ale zostalo najväčším spotrebiteľom mesto Kinshasa, ktoré má dobré verejné osvetlenie aj v najodľahlejších častiach.
